In the final installment of our beginner’s guide to Lego JNCs, we are going to focus on the prevailing style of builds in Japan. In Part 01 we admired highly complex creations comprised of hundreds of pieces where the sky’s the limit. In Part 02 we explored the popular 6-stud builds inspired by official Lego kits. Japan, as usual, prefers to take things to a new level with extremely difficult 4-stud builds.
The studs refer to how many of the standard Lego dots a car’s width can be. As we’ve seen with 6-stud builds, the style can be quite limiting. Even the official Lego sets have mixed results, but the challenge is part of the fun.
In Japan, however, they’re fanatical about 4-stud wide builds. If you thought restricting the cars to 6 studs was hard, taking away one-third of the available “pixels” makes it exponentially harder. You’ll often see these tagged on social media with #4WLC (4-Wide Lego Cars) or on their official “underground” blog, 4widelegocars.
Some require a very broad interpretation and some imagination. Choosing the proper color bricks is often key. Many evoke a certain style, and stanced cars seem to be popular. On cambered ones, the wheels are actually attached using pivoting tabs. And of course, the very angular world of kaido racers are the perfect fodder for Japanese lego builds.
There’s quite a lot of JNC subjects available to Lego builders. They seem to go hand in hand. Hopefully, our series has inspired you to get a bunch of colorful little bricks and build something. If you do, please let us know and send us a photo of your builds.
