KIDNEY, ANYONE? StarQuest flatty in the D

Today’s Kidney Car is a rarity, but it probably won’t even cost you an internal organ. Offered for sale on Craigslist Detroit is a 1986 Plymouth Conquest flatside for the sweet, sweet price of just $2,500.

To further whet the appetite of automotive hipsters, not only is this Mitsubishi Starion a rebadge, but it’s a rebadge to Plymouth, an orphaned marque. Moreover, 1986 was the last year the Conquest was sold as a Plymouth before the model name was shifted over to Chrysler.

The car itself is an early turbocharged flatside model, quite rare in itself. Though mileage isn’t stated, it appears to be in excellent condition, in that it is a car that exists in Michigan but shows no obvious signs of rust. Perhaps it was garaged during winter months or transplanted from warmer climes; the ad is scant on details.

What we do know is that there are three pedals on the floor, a rear wiper, and an interior cocoon of crushed burgundy velour as decadent as Count Dracula’s boudoir. And with an asking price equivalent to a two-year cable subscription, you’d almost have to be woozy from blood loss not to buy it. For the original ad, see Craigslist Detroit.

    Wish I had $2500 (US) !

  2. Kiran says:

I wish I lived in the us

  3. Falco says:

Nasty hidden rust, just look at that passenger side strut tower. It would be cheaper to fly to Cali and buy than to fix any rust belt car. Ask me how I know.

    • coltspeed says:

get this car and swap all the minty stuff on the cali car. cali car would be powdery plastic, cracked dash etc. at this age

  4. Yoda says:

You had me at manual transmission plus red crushed velour full-Brougham interior!

  5. Bob says:

    Westland /= “The D”.

    Just sayin’.

  6. Randy says:

Wish I hadn’t checked in just now… Damn.

All KINDS of nicer than mine was…

Another one like that will probably NEVER come along again.

  7. Mark Newton-John says:

The old joke back in the 80s was that Conquest was not a diplomatic name for a Japanese car.

  8. Brad D. says:

So this is a case of pictures better than reality. This car was checked out by a friend, no floors or frame rails left. VERY rusty car. Negotiate a cheap price and swap everything into a dry Cali car, but otherwise stay away from this one for sure.

I saw one for sale at a local lot a few years ago and it was called a conquest technica. Don’t know if that rings a bell.

    • Matt says:

found this way back when looking for images. The technica had a digital dash and a few other bits. there were changes along the years from the 83-87 model flattys. I have an 84 ES. Little hidden gem if you find these, the early etacs had a box with a toggle switch under the drivers seat. This toggled on the mitsu song that played when you opened the door. neat bit of nostalgia.
