As cool as GT-R clones may be, there’s something pure and simple about a four-banger Kenmeri. Despite two fewer cylinders the Skyline GL evokes no less nostalgia than the flared S20 street machines. In fact these are technically more nostalgic, especially in actual Ken & Mary-spec blue, as they sold many more of these than actual GT-Rs. Happy 110 Day from JNC!

LOL. Honestly, these older skylines really invoke a feeling for me. I know I will never own one, but I’d love to have an older one.
Now I bet some of you are wondering why these cars were never imported to North America.
Short answer, Japanese cars at this time were seen as econoboxes, since the leading import at the time was the Volkswagen Beetle.
Not for lack of trying. Toyota brought the Crown here as the Corona and Corolla were good sellers, and that didn’t last very long. Nissan (Datsun) tried with the 610 and 710, Mazda tried with the RX-4 and RX-5 (Cosmo) and pulled out after only a few years.
It’s just that more expensive Japanese cars had to overcome their econobox image.
Sure, there were likely issues with federalization, like glass, bumpers, and headlamps, but until Honda with the Acura Legend and of course, Toyota with the Lexus LS400 (Toyota Celsior) were Japanese cars considered more than appliances.
