Happy DNA Day from JNC

Today is National DNA Day, which celebrates the discovery, 65 years ago, of the double helix structure comprising life’s building blocks by James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, and Rosalind Franklin. And while DNA usually applies to, you know, biological organisms, cars can have DNA as well. What’s your favorite example of classic DNA found in a newer car?

My favorite is the way the Z car (excepting the Z32) carried 3 center stack gauges through from S30 to Z34.

A lot of people complain about how the new Supra is being developed by BMW, but I’m glad they’re keeping the Supra name. Am I wrong?

    • Michael says:

Nah, not at all mate! I join you too, & say “GO FOR IT NEW SUPRA”!!!!

A world with the Supra represented on the road is much better than one when it is not or forgotten about.

    • Mark Newton-John says:

No, most of the Supra development was in Japan by Toyota. The interiors sre different, the suspension tuning wis different. And they are adapting, not just dropping in a BMW motor.
My guess is they may call it an 8M rather than a 3JZ because Toyota uses the old U flat motor designator for the Subaru motor in the 86 (4U).

The Miata. From the NA chassis to now the ND chassis.

The Z car headlights. S30, and S130 had classic sugar scoop headlights. Z31 had half-hidden headlights that retained the sugar scoop look, though more angular. Z32 had its covered lights, but they were recessed, to give the appearance of the sugar scoop lights. Z33 and Z34 both retain the sugar-scoop look in the shape and position of their headlights. It, along with the center stack of 2-3 gauge pods, is one of the enduring features in the Z DNA.

You can step back a little further and look at the Roadster headlights and scoops – not as prominent as the 240Z but they were in the earlier design.

The roof line on mazda rotary coupes… From cosmo sport to rx8.

  7. Mark Newton-John says:

Look at the roofline from the iconic Toyota 2000GT. Now notice the same upswept rear quarter windows of the FT-1, 86 (née FR-S), and the upcoming Supra (MA90?).
Also, the T-grille of the 2000GT was also on the original Supra/Celica XX.
