Fuji Heavy’s FT-86 is now called Subaru BRZ

For all the Toyotaku upset about the boxer motor beating at the heart of the upcoming Toyota FT-86/Scion FR-S, perhaps you’ll find the star-badged version more palatable. Fuji Heavy Industries has announced that their equivalent of the reborn AE86 will be called the Subaru BRZ.

Apparently, that stands for “Boxer-engine, Rear-wheel-drive Zenith.” According to the press release, it “embodies ultimate passion for the new sports car and confidence in its distinctive trademark and core technology: the “Horizontally-Opposed Subaru Boxer engine”. The near-production concept will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and the production-production version will begin rolling off the assembly line in spring 2012

this is not what we had in mind Toyota. Wonder how many days the FT86 will be out before someone puts a beams in it… And how many seconds this will be out before someone puts a cannon on it.

No, I think if Subaru follows its past naming policy, then the hi performance version will be BRZ Spec C Type RA 22B Version III

Gee, i can’t wait to tell all my buddies that i’m driving a Subaru Letters And Numbers! I sure do love not having a name for my car.

  7. J.A.C.K says:

to be honest, i don’t care about the name or that it’s a collabo of subbie x toyota. i just care that is FR, light weight, balanced, INEXPENSIVE, reliable, and a blast to drive.

Spoken like a true enthusiast. The whining over semantics has literally made me sick to my stomach.

    • ylee says:

Exactly. Well said. When was the last time an affordable (below $30k) FR car was offered?

If you dont like the names, rebadge it with JDM goods 😀

It also needs to LOOK GOOD. How many years of bad looking, bloated, cars must we endure until some car company figures out that we should drive a car that looks good? Really, I am sick of the four door hatch “enthusiast” cars that resemble tiny minivans and the ugly, chunky two door sports cars we cannot even see out of the quarter window.

  8. Tyler says:

Waiting for them to show up on Autocross courses.

  9. mike says:

this reminds me of last century when the MR2 and RAV4 meant Mid engined Rwd 2 seater and Run about Vehicle 4wd…

  10. Harrison says:

I’m waiting for some enterprising fratboy-type to insert a magnetic letter O in between R and the Z.

  11. Lincoln Stax says:

These will start showing up in my neighborhood in about 10 years with fake Buick portholes crookedly glued on the fenders.
