Friday Video: Mazda 787B at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans

As we get ready for SevenStock tomorrow let’s round out Mazda Week with a Japanese documentary chronicling the Mazda 787B‘s historic siege on Le Mans. We are so completely obsessed with this machine that we made a shirt.

The film hails from the early 90s, probably not long after Mazda’s historic win in June twenty years ago. It follows the team during the lead-up, prep, and ultimately the race itself. Ear drums will shatter. Women will weep. Cheesy 90s pop songs will be played. Watch all four parts below the fold.

Thank you JNC for introducing this wonderful car to me (and off course to all the other readers), the stories about this car are very interesting, 700 BHP out of an 2,6L rotary engine is just amazing. I will order the t-shirt whenever it is available on your store.

bytheway: Is that picture from the ps3 game Gran Turismo 5?

    • Ben says:

No, that’s a real photo, lol!

    • Lincoln Stax says:

I’ve been racing the 787B in GT5 every night for the past week, racking up the money in seasonal events to buy the really expensive cars like the XJ13, 330P4, GT40 and a couple others.

Even though it’s only a digital representation, that car is a monster and sounds amazing.

  2. Lincoln Stax says:

I remember it well when Mazda won the ’91 race. I was pleases that a Japanese car had won, and I remember thinking “This is it. The floodgates have opened. The Japanese are going to dominate from this point on.”

    Man, was I wrong.

  3. Ben says:

I was on the edge of my seat in 1999 with the Toyota GT-One. So close…..

There have been class wins like the GT2 NSX, but it’s not the same.

  4. Rolando says:

Thank You guys at JNC for those great videos. Awesome memories that will be with us for times and times. Keep up the good work. Long live the Rotary Engine!

  5. Wolf says:

Painfully these links are now dead. Anywhere else to see this documentary? I’ve been looking for it for some time. Thanks!
