Friday Video: AW11 Toyota MR2 Goes In For the Kill

Normally when a funky Japanese car appears in a video they hide its plebeian roots by not showing any badges or emblems. Not so with La Roux’s 2009 music video for In for the Kill, in which the starring AW11 Toyota MR2‘s hood-bound “TOYOTA” logo and screamin’ eagle crest are prominently featured ten seconds in.

We could not think of a more appropriate car than an A-dub T-top for an synth-tastic 80s-themed moonlit getaway. This song is going straight into our Cressida wagon’s double-DIN so we can jam to the greenish glow of a dozen equalizer sliders. Watch the video after jump.

According to Wikipedia, this song was influenced by the opening theme to the Pole Position cartoon. As children of the 80s, our ears are so finely tuned to the nuances of the electronic keyboard that we don’t really hear a similarity. However, it did prompt us to look up the Pole Position intro, activating a portion of our brains that had laid untapped for a quarter century, so here it is, for nostalgia.

Haha, I blogged about the video last year as part of an article on the AW11 MR2’s 25th anniversary.

the producers have obviously never driven one with the t-tops off before – in real life, it’s actually a great alternative to using a hairdryer.

i definitely hear the similarities between the two.

Pole position theme was better, lol

Even though I have to agree with Neil I think La Roux has another fan now… Everything from that video (and song) breathes (early) 80s, I love it! 🙂

If you sawed that much at the wheel of an AW11 while driving at freeway speeds you’d be changing lanes, or perhaps even run straight into a barrier.

Love my ’89 and thrilled to see the perpetually under respected finally getting some recognition.

Oh! It’s a girl! I honestly couldn’t tell for a second. I miss my old MR2! Should have never gotten rid of it! I’m a big fan of 80’s metal, so this video actually ruins it for me! Now if Freddy Mercury was wasting a Camaro in an MR2 while singing Another One Bites The Dust! then I could dig it!

    Um-a targa top Mustang?

For those that don’t like the original there is a remix.

That is the version that is used in the Bayonetta video game commercial.

  8. Ben says:

Yeah, she does kind of have that 70s David Bowie androgyny thing going on.

  9. Sarcasmo says:

Be nice.. if I could SEE the friggin thing. >:(

Is that the same AW11 used in that Wheeler Dealers Segment? Similar color (not the red one).
