An EK9 Honda Civic Type R has sold for $73,000

Prices on top-spec Hondas and Acuras from the height of the Tuner Era have been climbing rapidly in recent years. The Acura Integra Type R is leading that charge, with clean examples selling between $60,000 and $82,000. But what about its little brother, the EK9 Civic Type R? Well, as it happens, last week in Tokyo a CTR sold for ¥7.64 million ($73,000 USD).

The car sold at the USS Tokyo auctions, which are basically used car auctions for dealers, so it wasn’t even at a fancy high-end collector car bidfest. However, the car certainly could have fit right in at one of them. For one, it had only 2,549 km (1,584 miles) on its odometer. It was rated at grade 4.5 out of 5, which is about as close to perfect as one can get at these types of auctions.

Like the Integra Type R, the Civic Type R was worked over with every race tuning trick in Honda’s portfolio. The main difference was a hand-ported B16B engine generating 185 ps (182 horsepower) at 8,200 rpm, but there were countless other modifications beneath the skin. It was lighter than the EK4 Civic hatchback it was based on thanks to the removal of sound insulation and power amenities, had a seam-welded chassis, and came equipped with a helical LSD, just to name a few. It was the first Civic to wear the Type R badge, and arguably the best (and by best, we mean purest to Honda’s car-building philosophy). Recently, even Honda themselves have been looking back fondly at their creation.

Bidding happens in a matter of seconds in these auctions, and the starting price of ¥1.88 million ($17,900 USD) was instantly obliterated and the final sale ended up at nearly four times the initial offering. Obviously, the like-new mileage is a big factor, and we expect this to raise the prices of other Type Rs. Also, cue the indignant cries of “$73,000 for a Civic!?”.

I see so many of these under appreciated. Ok it’s fwd, and not the purest thing, but heck when will we see high revving NA engines in cars again? Look at the latest Accord for the things to come. Death of NA engines, death of gearboxes, let alone manuals.

Wow! I am happy to see value being placed on these cars, but it does pain me my wallet to see them get so expensive.

I’ll take a cue from LeMons:

    “$73,000 my @$$!!”

  4. Dustin says:

I feel like this is an example of rich people getting together to fluff the market on these type of cars.

  5. As an EK9 owner this makes me happy 🙂

It’s great for the owners but in the long run, it will hurt true enthusiasts from getting their hands on these cars. I still smirking over the prices of an air-cooled Porsche.

But at least JDM cars are getting the attention they deserve.
