Does the Toyota FT-86 Logo Have a Boxer Engine On It?

Car and Driver claims to have uncovered the logo that will adorn the upcoming lightweight RWD Toyota FT-86 sports coupe. If this is true, hachiroku fans will be happy that the nickname for their beloved mid-80s RWD steed is now is now forever enshrined in Toyota canon. Buuuut they will also be sad, because this reminder that a Subaru 2.0 flat four — and not a traditional Toyota-Yamaha twin-cam — powers the FT-86 is too forever enshrined, right there on the car. We have our doubts that Toyota would put the boxer engine right there on the (rather ornate for Toyota Japan) logo, possibly pissing off legions of dedicated Japanese Toyota fans, so take this with a 2.0 liters of salt .

Until proven otherwise I completely wash my hands of this car being considered a real Toyota.

I am more curious about rumors of a baby FT86 that is smaller, RWD, and will have a smaller displacement Toyota 4 cylinder in it.

Until proven otherwise I completely wash my hands of this car being considered real.

Don’t worry, after further pondering I suspect this is a fake.

    1. It’s too ornate compared to other Toyota Japan logos.
    2. Where exactly on the car would this go that would not look glaringly out-of-place?
    3. Toyota Japan knows that the AE86 is a classic. They wouldn’t mix 86 with a blatant boxer display.

  4. James says:

What is wrong with a boxer style engine, I mean that is what I have in my Toyota. 2 cylinders or air-cooled, twin carb powered J-tin. I love my Yota-Hachi

Bunta Fujiwara is not amused by this BS.

  6. Nigel says:

He (Bunta) might even open his eyes for a second !

Didn’t Bunta get his son a Subbie anyways? THERE YOU GO! It makes sense now. besides, people should stop complaining. They should be happy that toyota is bringing back a lightweight rwd car to the market. Hopefully, this will be the continued trend for Toyota. Thumbs up.

Yeah right….. for all you wishers who think Toyota’s LAZYASS would even build this car… DREAM ON. I guess you guys must also believe in the Great Pumpkin, then.

We already got duped and let down by thinking that fugly LFA was going to be the next Supra… Now, it’s gonna be a Lexus??

I’m sick of psyching myself up, as far as Toyota goes. If you think Toyota is going to produce a car that is stylish, 2 doors, inexpensive, fun and RWD…You have a better chance of seeing a Unicorn or a Snuffleupagus walking down the street.
