MOTORSPORT: A new historic racing group for Datsun 510s and other compact sedans of the 60s and 70s to race this Saturday

This weekend, October 4-6 2019, Classic Sport Racing Group (CSRG)’s Charity Challenge will feature an exhibition of historic sedan racing through its John Morton Cup Series, named after Datsun racing legend John Morton himself. Joining the cars of the John Morton Cup will be the Historic B&C Sedan class, under which the Datsun 510, Alfa Romeo GTV, BMW 2002 and others raced some 40 to 50 years ago. With a grid of about forty cars, paired with the truly legendary  Sonoma Raceway (formerly Sears Point), fans are guaranteed a memorable flashback to the days of wheel-to-wheel small bore sedan racing.

It will be the inaugural event for the recently founded Historic B&C Sedan race group. Full disclosure: This group was put together by myself and a fellow racer, Dave S., with the purpose of building a true Historic B&C Sedan racing group, consisting entirely of cars which raced in in-period between the late-1960s to late-1970s.

Historic racing fans may recall the memorable Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion 2010 that featured the Historic Trans-Am sedans. John Morton took the seat of the two-time Trans-Am Two-Five Challenge winning BRE Datsun 510 once again against factory-backed Alfas and BMWs. After that event, many of those cars were parked due to the tremendous hike values of older historic racing sedans. With the promise of friendly competition and a safe environment that Historic B&C Sedan offers, the owners have decided to bring their cars out of hibernation and prepare them for this special race.

The Historic B&C Sedan group’s mission is to be recognized and accepted by bespoke historic races across the country. Notable historic Datsun 510s competing this weekend include:

Stay tuned for post-event coverage of what is no doubt to be a monumental event.
