Datsun 280ZX Go-Kart

We like to check out what’s going on at the Datsun Heritage Museum every couple of months or so, as they’re always changing the cars around and adding more cool exhibits. On our most recent trip there we spotted this cool little 280ZX-shaped go-kart on display.

Ignore the stickers for a moment. This was an actual Datsun promotional piece from back in the day, created as part of an ad campaign when the 280ZX was new. Datsun commissioned the bodies and placed them over standard single-seat lawn-mower engined go-karts and brought them to various dealerships and events. Recently, the DHM found this piece of Datsun history and acquired it for their collection.

The paint and decals aren’t original, as you may have guessed by the “NISMO” and “Nissan” logos – this was when the brand was still known as Datsun in the US. The “240Z” label is obviously wrong, and we’re going to go out on a limb here and say that the “G Spot” racing sticker with the silhouette of a nude woman in repose is probably not period correct.

And why yes, that’s is Kelvin Hiraishi’s RB25-powered 240Z that was on the cover of JNC Issue 1, now on display in the museum, along with the double-headed Datsun F-10 that was at the ZCCIV show last month. The museum plans to return the go-kart to it’s original paint scheme based on old photos, so if you have any to contribute please let them know.
