Being the semi-old farts that we are, we do not know why purveyors of electronica have flocked to the Datsun 240Z as the automobile of choice for their music videos. First it was “Like a G6” and “Rocketeer”, both by the Far East Movement. Now there’s this fellow by the name of Russ Chimes who released an EP called “Midnight Club”.
Don’t get your hopes up, though. The three-part story in the music videos have nothing to do with either the Devil Z nor the legendary Japanese hashiriya team Mid Night Club. Instead, it’s about some hipster kidnapping plot whose only saving grace is that it features a yellow 240Z fairly prominently. Watch the videos below the fold if you must.

Hat tip to Bryan C.
240z overload, now everyone seeks and restores them
I surely must qualify as an old fart, but I liked it!
2010: electronica flocks to the 240Z
2011: country music embraces the Mazda Cosmo (??)
*shrug*
Russ Chimes’ has some other tracks titled “Mulsanne” and “Daytona”, so he must be a car guy in some capacity
i was really happy when i saw watched russ chimes’s videos for the first time. his music is inspired by cars (but not a JNC unfortunately):
When asked about his artistic process in an interview with the online magazine esper in 2009, Chimes said, “Above the desk in my studio there’s a picture of an 80’s Porsche 911. When I’m writing I always think, ‘Would this track sound good while I’m driving that car?’ And that’s how I audition every track that I make!”
wished celicas where in music video lol
Almost looks like a special film for an unknown benchmark for Nissan.
I think the Z is the most recognizable hence its continued use in videos.
The music is ok but, not as good as Chemical Brothers or Jazzanova.
Country music would probably more likely embrace a Crown pickup, which would be rad 🙂
Thank you Hollywood for finally managing to include a Japanese car in a story that was not about either drug running or robbing trucks?
The music isn’t bad, but bumping the tempo up to about 150 BPM would do wonders for increasing the excitement and urgency of the visual story line.
Ben, and maybe 2012 will see the Reggae scene rolling in AE86s?
Somewhere, the word “hipster” has to weasel itself in.
How else would you describe these guys? 🙂
A few of the cast in the videos are students/alumni of the Art Center College of Design, so yes, they are somewhat hip. As for electronica and the 240z, I have been guilty blasting some euro trance while driving through the twisties on the PCH. 😉
Jimmy Chamberlin, the drum-whiz and a former drummer of the Smashing Pumpkins used to own a Datsun 280z. I found it in Wikipedia.
