Art Corner: Fisch’s Datsun 200SX Appeal

The 1977-79 Datsun 200SX was widely derided as one of the ugliest cars ever to hit the American market. That was because we never saw it the way it was intended by Nissan — as the S10 Silvia with flush JDM bumpers. Luckily our friend, Datsun 210 owner and mega-talented artist Scott Fischer has illustrated his own version of the 200SX, minus the park-bench US-spec bumpers while adding a healthy does of bolt-on flares and Longchamps. He calls it the SX Appeal, and it’s easy to see why.

Fair criticism here, but it looks like it was sitting in a field for 30 years. I dunno, maybe it’s just the tone of the colors used that makes it more aged than it looks.

    Good eye,

The artist in question regularly posts on ratsun, which values the hues and cues that have to do with age, some even leave the rust as a sign of pride, which is why the hues transmit the essence of patina, despite the vehicle looking so fresh.

    T-shirt worthy.
(And also would make a great poster).

really like this, i own a 78 200sx and love the way they look. as much as i like it this is not a 200sx, its a Silvia. yes the bumpers were mentioned but also the grill is Silvia as is the fender mirrors, admittably all things i would love to have for my 200. that aside the only real problem i have with the picture is envy. take a look at a 200sx/Silvia. the fenders are very much square and the rear fender is almost like a skirt that comes down below the top of the tire, yes anything can be modified but those fenders/wheelhouses look more like a kenmeri c110 skyline, which is a very similar body style.wow, sorry for the rant, love the pic hate/envy the fenders : )

Love his work. He recently posted pics of his work room (studio?) and it’s pretty awesome. My girlfriend got me a few of his prints for Christmas 2 years ago. They’re hanging on the wall by the pool table 🙂

I do prefer a clean, shiny car but this is very nice. Good to see some S10 love outside the minitruck world 😉

It appears to be a heavily modified photograph with lots of Photoshop painting involved- what media were used?

Wow thanks for the post Ben! An honor! Yup the idea was to take a USDM 200sx (since they are here) Get the JDM goodies and make this often overlooked Datsun cool as can be. Which to my mind, and the more controversial move, means to cut the wheel wells and add flares!

There is a real RHD Silvia in CA somewhere. It would be sweet to get your Hands on that!

I like to try to shine light on the red-headed step children of the Datsun world. Currently I am working on a F10! (The start of the drawing is posted on Ratsun in the general section.)

I would like to see one of these paintings with some babe sitting in my midnight blue ’83 Datsun 280X maybe with a little extra artwork on the side of the car, which is not on the car in real life.
