I have no idea who Larry June or The Alchemist are because I’m old. What I do know is that in their new video that just dropped this week for the song “89 Earthquake” there’s a Z31 Nissan 300ZX ripping some donuts and burnouts. It’s not just any Z31 either, but a pretty slick stock-looking 50th Anniversary Edition.
The song title appears to be a reference to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a 6.9 magnitude shake that devastated the Bay Area. The video was filmed around San Francisco and cars — the Z and an early C4 Corvette — would have been still newish used cars at the time the quake struck. Beyond that there doesn’t seem to be any particular reason for the cars to be there except that they look cool. Neither are referenced in the lyrics, which are mostly about a jet-setting lifestyle that name-checks a Benz and a Rolls.
The Z, which also appears on the single’s album cover, is a turbo 50th Anniversary Edition, identifiable by its exclusive Light Pewter over Thunder Black two-tone. It also comes with a badge that reads “Nissan 50 Anniversary” on the driver’s side fender only (Nissan never affixed the badge to the passenger side). The special edition was offered for a single year, 1984, to celebrate not the anniversary of the Z but a half century of Nissan, which was established in 1934. The particular car used in the video wears original California “sunset” plates, which means it’s been in the Golden State its whole life and is thus likely rust-free. Nissan built 5,448 50th AE cars for the US and Canada so they’re not super rare, but still, hopefully this car wasn’t hooned too hard to make a splashy video.

What a way to continue the Nissan Z’s bad reputation, like in your other post…. Maybe that publicity will further drive prices up? Z31 prices have gone up a bit, the so-called “Boulevard Cruiser.”
