BUBBLE ERA EXCESS: 1984 Nissan Gloria Turbo Brougham VIP Super Selection Ⅱ

Since we’re talking about the greatest interiors this week here’s a rarely mentioned cabin that gives Mitsubishi’s plaid and Subaru’s bizarro asymmetry a run for their money. Behold the Bubble Era excess of the 1984 Nissan Gloria Turbo Brougham VIP Super Selection Ⅱ. See? Japan’s economy was booming so hard in the 1980s that Nissan could afford to spend triple what they do now just on badging for a comically long name. But that’s nothing compared to the interior.

The Turbo Brougham VIP Super Selection Ⅱ was the top-of-the-line version of the Y30-generation of Cedric/Gloria twins. Though a stately sedan competitor to the Toyota Crown, Nissan wedged a VG30ET from a 300ZX Turbo under the hood. There was even a Jack Nicklaus limited edition named after the famous golfer. It didn’t boast much more than some extra badging, but at least you could make the name even longer if you wanted to.

So here’s what the driver of this magnificent beast sees when slipping behind the wheel. The stereo and climate control resemble a deluxe 1980s hi-fi system that would look great just sitting on your credenza at home. They’re spread out, width-wise, so the center console doesn’t have to reach to the transmission tunnel. Though the seats aren’t bench, it allows for that open brougham feeling.

The steering wheel has cruise control on the right and auxiliary buttons for the stereo on the left, including impressively a volume dial. Notably, the “floating” center stays level while wheel and spokes turn.

Of course this being a Japanese luxury barge, it also comes with curtains for the rear window and optional doily seat and  headrest covers. Fully loaded! This particular car is currently going for ¥601,000, or about $5,893 in US dollars on Yahoo Japan with a buy it now of ¥1,200,000 ($11,727).

    Want. So. Hard.

  2. Walter says:

Amazing!! You found the exact same interior that I was writing about…with the exception of the missing digital dashboard. 😉

  3. Wantyerknobby says:

holy smoke check the complexity of the radio and hivac units!

  4. The Black CRX says:

You forgot to mention the best part of all: pillarless 4-door hardtop!

  5. John M says:

Simply Gloriaus! I feel a serious Broughamance coming on. If it doesn’t work out, hope someone can at least console me. Are those illuminated plates?

    • It was quite common in that era to replace the standard license plate lamp with an UltraViolet fish tank lamp. This made the rear license plate glow brightly at night.

      • Kuroneko says:

Never seen that, but I have seen internally-lit plates since the late 1980s… Still used by the 88.88 crowd these days too. Neko.

    • Randy says:

I didn[‘t see the plates being “specially” lighted, but you got my attention with the UV fish tank light idea. Ultraviolet LEDs doable for the same effect?

(Probably not legal in PA, but an interesting idea.)

The only internally-lighted plates I’ve seen have been in the aftermarket – like logo plates.

Awsome interior. The closest thing to that from the picture was offered here in Europe by Nissan/Datsun Laurel (especially the C32 gen.). The dash look very similair. I need a Laurel. Defenetly.

  7. Nigel says:

Just love the “floating” steering wheel.

  8. Dimitri says:

This blows the Cressi out the water.

  9. Jim-Bob says:

My only question is :”Does it have pillow top seats?” For me at least, a car isn’t a true Brougham without them. After all, all the great American broughams (Cutlass Supreme Brougham, for example) had them and you just can’t have that baroque sense of over the top ridiculousness without them. Then again, I wouldn’t turn this down either since I would just love to be able to tell people that I was driving a car with such a long name. Although, yeah, I would prefer to be able to say I was driving a “1984 Nissan Gloria Turbo Brougham VIP Super Selection ⅡJack Nicklaus limited edition “, but beggars can’t be choosers.

    • Yoda says:

This particular car having leather, it does make me wonder what the cloth version looked like. Maybe not pillow-top but surely something suitably ’80s!

  10. cesariojpn says:

If this was brought to America, some idiot would modify the heck out of the car, destroying the charm of the car.

  11. What is the purpose of the white unit next to the gear lever?

  12. Agnus Prez says:

I want to to thank you for this wonderful read!! I definitely enjoyed every bit of it. I’ve got you saved as a favorite to look at new things you post…
