KIDNEY, ANYONE? 18,000-mile 1978 Datsun 510

1978 Datsun 510 wagon 04

Raise your hands, who wants a showroom condition Datsun 510? Well, no, it’s not that 510, but the A10 Stanza was a fine machine in its own right. After all, it did win Australia’s Southern Cross Rally three times in a row, and right now there’s one of the cleanest examples we’ve ever seen on eBay near Dallas, Texas.

Thanks to its automatic transmission, this 1978 Datsun 510 wagon probably won’t have George Fury launching it skyward any time soon, but it’s too perfect for that anyway. It’s 18,830 miles make the slushbox forgivable. Plus, it’s mint, it’s a wagon, and it’s a most glorious shade of brown.

At the time of this writing the bidding has been surprisingly exuberant, with 22 offers driving the price up to $5,700. With current trends going the way they are, we wouldn’t be surprised if some USDM fanatic from Japan scooped it up and brought it back home.

Thanks to Tom Anderson for the tip!

If I had the money I would buy it! I drove one of these when I was in high school.

I sooooo hope whoever gets this car preserves it exactly as it is. It might not be the most exciting JNC (and it’s certainly not that 510), but it’s a time capsule and probably the only one remaining on earth in this kind of shape. I can’t imagine that it was found quite this clean three owners ago (that’s a lot of changing hands for an unused car), but one of them did some very nice detailing on this, without seeming to mess up anything or slather it with shiny goo. If I were a Datsun guy or had unlimited funds and space, I’d be all over this wagon.

Everything about it screams 1978, from the brown-on-brown (on several more browns), to the instrument panel layout. (So if the clock went way over there, did anything ever fill that hole next to the speedo? Did any A10 ever come with a tach in the US?)

Yes, plenty of A10s came with tachs. In fact, on later models (square headlight) it is very common. So much so, I’ve never seen one without it. Of course they used an integrated cluster, unlike the “pod” style seen here, so it was probably easier for Nissan to put the same cluster in every car. 🙂

This one needs to be kept in a garage and driven on weekends.
    (And the odd summer weekday).

My dad had a 1979 Datsun 210 that was darker pooh brown. The 4-speed trans was the easiest manual stick to row.

Powerful? Uh, yeah, not today my friend.

    • john says:

Oddly, in high school I had a 210 in exactly the same combo as this car. And just as clean.

Of course, that was 22 years ago, so… 🙂

My folks ordered a ’79 210 wagon in mint green for my mom to drive around. A/C and 5-speed. But when it came in, it was Maroon Mist with black interior. Made it pretty warm during the summer months. But yeah, those were slick transmissions.

Stumbled across the mint green one on eBay a couple of years ago. In Arizona. It HAD to be the one my folks ordered. A/C and 5-speed? Yep. Wanted to buy it and give it to them, but didn’t have the funds at the time.

Stanzas came in a wagon? GTFO!

dream car is a 1979 Stanza in yellow. srsly.

  6. Tyler says:

This is very close to the shit brown wagon I long for… would prefer something older and with a manual… but in this kind of condition collectors can’t be terribly picky. It’s not like you can walk into a dealer and buy one.

this thing would look killer with some oldskool shoes and slammed to the asphalt!!!

  8. When I get a chance, I’ll take a pic of a friend of mine’s ’75 Corolla 4door DeLuxe. Original miles on it is less than 30K, all stock outside and inside, with matching oem wheels as well as CA blue plates that look like they just got removed from the envelope they came in…LOL
