Just wanting to introduce you all to my 1977 Mazda 929 RX Hardtop,
which over time I have nicknamed "BabyGirl".

The next 2 photos are not original pictures of my Mazda 929 Hardtop,
but because it looks identical, including the wheels, I decided to use them

After owning her for a month, and putting on a different set of rims.
Was never a fan of the Series III front RX-4/929, so I changed it!!

And because the Series III bumper didn't match the Series II front, it was also changed...............

I took out the Old Woodgrain Dash.............
And not so good interior...............

And replaced them with custom Grey interior
out of wrecked RX4/929 Coupe which I puchased for parts,
and installed a set of early RX-7 front seats,
black with red/grey inserts..............

Kevin Webb from SCR South Coast Rotary in Wollongong, NSW Australia,
sourced an early 4 port 13B from an RX-4,
re-built it with his SCR Racing Apex Seals, and J-Ported it.
It runs a re-jetted 48IDA Webber, with Series II RX-7 electronic ignition,
lightened flywheel, 4 puck ceramic clutch with 1 tonne presure plate,
RX-7 Series II 5spd box, single piece tailshaft, thru to the stock 929 diff.

It runs custom 2” medium length extractors collecting into 3” mandrel bend exhaust,
2 custom made 3” straight thru resonators,
over the diff into a custom made 3” straight thru muffler,
with stainless steel packing, and a 3” bendy chrome dump pipe.

100 decibels at 2,200 idle. Deep Brapp Brapp, nice and quiet. LOL

Colour is a custom mixxed Mazda Velocity Red.
Just before I re-sprayed the car,
the opportunity and the decision came to change the rear tail lights.

I was never a real fan of the Series III, so to change the look,
I changed the front nose cone to a Series II,
and the rear was going to be changed to a Series II also.............

....................but decided against it!!
Instead I took a different path...............
And it turned out fantastic...............

The finished product now sits on a set of
Australian made 16x7 and 16x8 Gold Simmons B45s

I’m no mechanic, no panel beater, or spray painter,
just someone having a go, and fun with hired some equipment.

Love that car!! are those RX-2 taillights? Whatever they are they look great. I'm a big fan of the Australian way of building cars. You guys down there build some nice rides!!

I can't wait to start work on my RX-4. :lol: :D

Hey man, sweet overhaul there. Mate, can't say I've seen the Rx-2 taillight conversion. Love the B45's. What the colour? When you swap the front over do you need just the outer panels or do you need other inner panel to bolt them to??

Thanks for your comments PERTANO. :tu:

Yes they are RX-2/R-100 tail lights.
The difference being is I have used 4x Brake/Reverse light units instead of the Blinker/Red reflector set up that you would normally see on Rx-2s and R-100s.

Hi B1500boy.
Thanks for the feedback.
The colour of the B45s is Simmons Gold, they look fantastic because they were only resprayed 1st week in January.
The colour of the car is a custom version of Mazda,s Velocity Red, found on the 6, 3, RX8.
Custom being that when I was getting the paint mixxed, they didn't have the full ingredients, so I took a chance with a couple of different ingredients.
Wasn't sure how it would turn out. And it worked :tu:

I used the Series III guards.
Only encountered 2 problems.
First, the front stone tray beaver panel, needed a couple of new holes drilled to bolt it to the bottom of the guard.
Second, the Series II guards have a slight cut out to allow the bumper bar ends to sit neatly inside once the rubber inserts are placed on. but since those rubber ends are not always available, I don't have them.
The bumper ends fit snuggly over the guards, just have to be careful as there is not a lot of room to allow easy removal and hence its easy to scratch the paint.

I found that all the bolt up points are the same, had to change the headlight craddles to suit the different grill though.
The inner guards in these car are part of the front chassis section, so they are all the same, or very very similar.

Sweet, basically very similar to swapping the pointy nose Capella to a flat nose and vice versa. I've hadn't tried it on the the 929 series yet, thanks for that!!

Hi 123sub, thanks.
The difference in the Hardtops, not a lot, very similar.
The difference in the 4dr sedans is that the 1973 Series I has a flat nose, similar to the 73-75 929, and the dash is also the same as the 929.
The series II has a pointy nose, the same as the coupe, and the dash is the same as the coupe, it is the wrap around/cockpit style.
Maybe someone out there in Rx4 land may have more definite and more information, on the rest of the differences.
I've only ever owned one original 74 Rx-4, the rest have been a rotarized 1973 929 sedan, and 2 1975 929 RX Hardtops.

great tranformation on the car you have cetainly put alot of work into it.
with the j-port 13b any estimates on horsepower made at the flywheel ?

OK, it's turned a 929RX into an RX4, but I don't know anyone who would regard that as a bad thing. :D

Not certain at the flywheel, but at the last dyno tune it had, was a very subtle 160 horsepower at the rear wheels with the current set up

I think because that here in Australia the RX-929/RX-4 clone, is often advertised as an RX-4, there is a stigma about non originals.

When the genuine purchasers arrives to see the advertised mint looking, and mint condition RX-4 with cash ready to buy, only to find out that the compliance plate and chassis numbers says different, so they have wasted they're time. :shock: :x :evil:

I believe now because of the rarity of any old skool Mazda rotary, or any other old skool vehicle for that matter, that this stigma is slowly vanishing, as enthuthiasts, like myself, are attempting bring out some really fine examples. :tu: :tu: :tu:

And on the streets here, its absolutely :mrgreen: fantastic to see ANY old car, thats been looked after, in pristine condition, or recently rebuilt, in amongst all the plastic fantastic white and grey clones that we see everyday. :td: :td:

Changed rear tail muffler to an X-force Varex stainless steel muffler, which has internal butterfly and has made it pretty quiet, at the push of a button using a remote, or loud as hell, pretty cool actually, unfortunately the old mufflers, which were not really that old, were all burned out, only the casing was still intact in the front 2 resonators, and the rear muffler internal tube was warped from the heat...

how did you change the front?
i have a 78 wagon that i want to change the front on, what options do i have, did you do any welding ti fit that front?
what parts did you need?
