For cars imported to the US,
Alfa Romeo GTV 2L, Jaguar Series 3 E-type (its got a V12) and or a 510. That said, a Datsun roadster thats been sitting on the lot for 2 or 3 years would also work.

Oh, and as far as the Crowns, I have a dealer catalog thing (dated 11/71) that pictures MS65, MS63, and MS75 Crowns.

The MS75 was available in 1972. I know because I have one. :D :D
My friend has one that is a 71 right down the street from me. My old MS63 was a 1971 though.

The more I think about this question I would buy a Cressida if it were 1972, which is what my father wanted me to buy instead of the 1972 Celica I purchased (earlier I said it was a 1971, but I found my paperwork and it was a 1972 Celica).

I still think too many auto companies are making cars that look just like the ones they tried to sell the previous year.

BAD mistake.

Proof? They brought back the mustang and look how they sold. Same with other unique look cars.

The Celica was it's own unique style, until they ruined it by making it look like every other car on the road.

I'd go for a Mazda rx3 coupe, if they were out of stock I'd settle for an rx2 coupe.

1972 and I've got to buy a new car? I'd probably end up with a base-spec MK1 Civic in a solid colour with no options, probably on some sort of hefty hire-purchase "tick" agreement where I pay it back over 10 years.

In reality, I think the 1972 "me" would be driving around in a slightly tired-looking Daihatsu Compagno 4-door with a dubious MOT that I bought off the side of the road.

I would buy a new Cadillac or Ford full size pick-up from a Dealer who had an inventory of Subaru 360 Deluxe sedans that he couldn't sell. If I buy the Ford pick-up, they would load a new Subaru 360 into the bed as a freebie! Or, a free 360 with my new Cady purchase! Sweet deal!
They couldn't sell them in the land and time of the American Muscle Car.

In 1972 it would certainly be a Ford Falcon XA GT Hardtop.
Probably black on black stripes, side exhausts, with some fat charcoal centred torqs and goodyear racing tyres.

This, given that little ol' NZ didn't really have much in the way of choice back then, and stuff buying anything British

<fanboi> Although I'd probably have flown to Japan and bought a KPGC10 GT-R. </fanboi>

I didn't think they made a Cressida in 1972? I was pretty sure Cressidas didn't start until 76-77?

I would have to say 240 Z. I'm personally partial to the injected s30's, but its 72 and they don't exist yet. Other than that I would love a whale tail 911.
