Yes, the Hardtop is the Coupe, and the 2-door sedan is actually a different car as described.

Actually...no.

The Coupe and Hardtop shared the sportier styling but the Hardtop had roll-down rear windows and a different shape to the rear window glass (obviously the glass wasn't interchangeable since the Coupe's rear glass didn't roll down). The 2-Door Sedan was a stripped-down 4-Door Sedan with only two doors. I'm not sure if the rear window glass between the 2-Door Sedan and the Coupe were interchangeable, but I'm pretty sure not. One of the board members at USMB, moosens, would know for sure. What I do know is that all three models were different, and served different markets. The Coupe served those who wanted a sporty Subaru (think WRX); the 2-door Sedan served those who wanted a basic, stripped-down A to B subaru (think Impreza Brighton from a couple years back); and the Hardtop (only available in GF trim for most of the model run) was the luxury Subaru (think GL-10 or Limited trim).

Hope this helps. I have a couple of original sales brochures that outline the major differences in trim, too; I'll have to look them out.

Andrew

The only good way to tell is that window... Coupe = more of a triangle, 2-door = more of a square.

Any photos of the version with the actual roll down rear window? That one appears to be a pop-out...

Are you sure any of the 70's coupes had roll-down windows? I don't recall seeing that on the one or two i've seen in person.

I don't think they did, that's why I asked for the photo.

And in my opinion (and 99.9% of other people's too), unless there's no B-pillar, it's not a "Hardtop". It's a Coupe. :tu:

I stand corrected.

I just re-checked my service manuals/parts manauls, and the HARDTOP version is the one with the rear sliding down window.

However, I can't seem to differentiate the difference between the 2-door and the Coupe. I think thats just an options difference as stated previously, but the Hardtop is the "coupe-esque" looking model and indeed LACKS a b-pillar all together!

There does seem to be a slight difference in the rear side window of the two models. One is more triangular, the other more "square". But that could just be the pics...

You are probably correct, the part numbers for the quarter panel, glass, and such are all different for the 2-door compared to the coupe, but they didn't make a "separate" section in either the Service or Parts manual for the 2-door or coupe (they are listed together).

Here is the best photo i've found of the 2-door that might indicate the windows are indeed different:

so there's a fixed window
a popout
and a roll down.

with the fixed window car having a higher roof line....

wow.

really the high roof line might be good for me since I'm 6'2.

the FE coupe was only made in 78 and 79, the FE stands for fuel efficient, they were like a GL but with a higher gear 5th gear and a couple things done to the motor like higher compression and different carb to make it get somewhat high fuel mileage, it was a sweet car and sure wish I still had it.

I have the two door coupe of the 1400 variety.
Front seat space is fine IMO, although my drivers seat is fubar and sits low.
The back seat on the other hand is terrible, your hear will hit the top of the rear window frame.
I am not tall though.
