Hi all

I have been missing having a fun weekend car that I can take on cruises etc and have been keeping an eye out for something classic and preferably in original condition.

That search led me to this little gem. Its a 1969 KE15 SL Sprinter with just over 90,000km on the clock. Was owned by a 95 yo (!!!!) marine engineer, who hasn't driven it in the last 4 or 5 years, but up to then was his pride and joy.

I dealt with his daughters who wanted it to go to a loving home, and fortunately they decided I was the perfect second owner! They were apparently never allowed to drive it when they were growing up, it was his car and his car only!

it had a flat battery so it wouldn't start today, but I suspect she will fire up and run with out too much difficulty. Interior is very good - mint dash top, that great sports steering wheel, plastic on the sunvisors. Drivers seat has tears along the seams, but that is easy enough to sort out and carpet is buggered. Interestingly it looks like its a two tone pattern carpet - I would love to see what it looked like new.

Exterior is very straight. Has a spot of rust in the drivers door and surface rust on the boot, roof and bonnet from where its been polished to an inch of its life. Bumpers are straight but need a rechrome and the tail lights are pretty faded (look for a wanted ad soon!)

Plans will be to tidy it up, get it registered again and driver her around. Repaint at some point I guess. Maybe some whitewalls, a bowls hat and a venetian to finish off the Grandpa Spec :)

Here are some pics:

Definitely planning on keeping it stock!

Update - this thing is amazing!

New battery, a little bit of "Start Ya Bastard" down the carby throats and she fired up.

Idles perfectly and in a quick run around the block seems to purr like a kitten. No coughs or hiccups!

Brakes are dodgy, but that could be just me forgetting about lack of vacuum assistance.

Home tomorrow on a tow truck, and then we can get into the clean up :)

Nice indeed - makes me regret swapping mine for a Simca (and selling that shortly afterwards)...

They are very faded. The aussie sun makes the lenses go white-ish.

I friend told me about a way he uses to polish them up, so I will give that a go.

they need resurfacing so maybe some 400 grit paper wet sanded then polish?

Well two weeks into ownership I have given the old girl a wash, a good clean inside, an oil change and a coolant change.

The old bloke who used to own it must have been a short ass. He had some timber blocks in under the rear mounts for the drivers seat, propping it up about 20mm. No wonder it felt weird when I was driving it!

A good wash indicates it needs a respray so that the surface rust is attended to. Doors have a bit of rust in the bottoms, but that is the only real bad rust to speak of.

Drivers seat is buggered and needs re-trimming. Rear seat has a few spots where the seams have split, but can be re-sewn so all good on that front.

Engine is going to need a rebuild I think. Pretty sure the smoke clouds are telling me rings are gone!

There seems to be a poorly done repair around the rear boot badge. Paint is different colour and almost brushed on. THe Toyota badge is held on by three self tappers! So will be on the hunt for one of those eventually

Here are some more pics...

Boot is amazingly clean and straight

Carpets are pretty damned good considering their age.. apart from the drivers side which is knackered. The little silver rings you can see are actually holding press studs to hold the carpet down on mounts in the floor - I don't know if this is factory or done by the owner

This is a little tag on the ventilation controls explaing their settings. Apparently all the KE1*'s had this when they were delivered. (got to get rid of that clock on the console I think!)

Image

Seats are generally in sensational shape, apart from drivers seat and some tape holding split stitching on the rear seat.
