i agree with you. it took me months to get myself to go beyond cutting the wheel well. i saved every scrap and took a lot of photos and measurements so i can go back to stock if i ever find a decent 6mm early 12a in good condition and want to do a full restoration.

i think though.. just by working on it, regardless of what i do, its having a better life now than it has in the previous 25 years. it was destined for the scrap heap and had no love from anybody besides the original owner and me. im trying to do it justice but at the same token, i need to learn this skill set so one day i can produce vehicles of the same caliber as other members on this forum. it makes me smile to work on and im excited to see the outcome of a collaboration of early j-tin hot rod parts in an otherwise forgotten burden.

been busy with motor and trans mounts. those are complete but i didnt take photos.

next step was fuel system.
i tried taking the hatch cover off but it was so rusty that it was obliterated as soon as i touched the bolts
Image

the gasket is still soft and pliable though probably worthless since its checked pretty badly
Image

underneath, i removed this cool louvered panel
Image

and was greeted with another stockpile of 40 year old dirt to the face
Image

all nekkid
Image

and if you recall, someone clipped all the wiring back here when they swiped the tail lights so i have to run a new pump wire
Image

2 gallons of this was in the tank
Image

and now for the part where i need help/advice.
i know nothing about carburetors or fuel requirements for them or turbo setups.

what pump should i get? what regulator should i get?

my friend was looking at the carb and asked me if it was internally regulated. i have no idea so i took photos in hopes that someone can shed some light.
Image

also can anyone tell me which fuel lines go where?
Image
Image

thanks for all the help!

so i got the engine running over memorial day weekend and was just dialing in the idle. it died and upon further inspection, i found that the engine was seized.
Image
this was the final run. you can hear it bog down then it dies.

pulled the engine and started tearing it down. found a few strange things about it

Image
looks good

Image
from here it looks good.

upon closer inspection
Image
plugs in upside down and apex corner seal is really short. ive never seen this before
also all the apex seals only have a single spring instead of two. anybody have any insight?

Image
looks good

from here, the center iron doesnt want to move. the eshaft is stuck and wont allow for the rock so i flip it over and pull the stat gear bolts, plate and remainder of the stack.

greeted with shavings
Image

after some deliberation, decide to pound the eshaft out and end up with this
Image
stat gear bearing is frozen, locking the rotor onto the eshaft. when i muscled it apart, it slid off the stat gear.

so now im on the hunt for an eshaft and stat gear. im glad i opened this up though. i wouldnt have found the other issues otherwise.

freed the rotor from bondage today
Image

Image

good news is that the engine the car came with has good stationary gears and bearings and these rotor bearings are still good. im really lucky to only have to be replacing an eshaft.

im going to upgrade to fd corner seal springs though and use pineapple water seals.

and unfortunately, i think ill start cleaning up the outside of this engine too. cant be doing all this work and not touch it. i really wanted to keep the patina and age but i cant bring myself to not beautify it.

just a mock up but i really like how the aluminum on the manifold ant carb came back to life.

as soon as my seal kit gets here, it will be ready to go back together.

Nice, are you going to change the rotor bearings while you're at it?

i thought about it and i still might. the photos make them look bad but they arent grazed and there are no scratches or marks. i think what the photo is picking up is the jelly i smeared on them after i rinsed to prevent rust.

edit: i think i will replace these bearings. cant go wrong at 30$ apiece.

Weber carb's aren't regulated. You need to have a low pressure pump, a regulator and ideally a pressure gauge plumbed in. I can't remember off the top of my head if RX-2's have return fuel lines (I'll assume they do), but keep the same setup with the Weber.

I had a small Facet pump on a very mildly ported 12a EP and it was barely enough. You need something like a Carter Gold pump.

this book: http://books.google.com.au/books/about/ ... edir_esc=y

by Pat Braden is very good. Basically, don't listen to backyard hacks, you only need something around 4.5 psi of fuel pressure, some dyno time to get the jetting right and the right combination of return springs etc to make it all work.

Bummer about the e-shaft!

Another bit of progress. Busy days, slow to get to my own stuff.

I picked up a parts car for all the little things I couldn't find. As luck would have it, I scored way more than expected.

Found some seatbelts but not sure if they're correct.
Image

Found a horn button to go on my sa wheel
Image
But not sure if I want to keep that our go with the originally planned nardi
Image
Also got sun visors and rear view mirror
Image

Badges, maker lights, windshield wipers and a whole bunch more but no photos.

Pretty excited and the rest of the coupe is heading to Australia.

so i moved the libres to the rx3 so i could move it around outside.

this left the rx2 on jack stands. i had a set of stock wheels but they were in bad shape and the tires were trash.

since its getting colder and work is slowing down i can finally get back to the car for a bit. wheels and tires are the first thing.

As an ex-aircooled driver, and now a Honda twin-cam person, this looks like an alien space-ship. But, totally gorgeous regardless. Great stuff! Neko.
