Neko, your photos make me want to take a whole different approach to my next trip to Japan! Keep 'em coming.

That's the idea! Here's an old set from one of our favorite areas of Tokyo.

Image

Bound by a few railway lines on two sides, and the Arakawa on another, Kita-senju area's circuitous streetscape dates back to the Meiji era. With many old and interesting places to explore. Typical building style in the area:

Image

Typical parking style of the area, in this case a rather neat old kei:

Local restaurant staff, having made us the best & biggest chicken katsu lunch ever:

Local rubbish collector passes a Jeans Shop:

You know you're in the wilds of anywhere when the local oba-san ride three-wheeled bicycles for their extra load carrying capabilities (Honda Cub age aside perhaps):

The sun going down over a long day on the streets:

That's a pretty neat set there Moomin! Out Yamatedori:

With a minty Subaru 4WD for company (a remarkable car to see in Japan these days):

Past the Sky Tree and the Flaming Turd, having trouble focusing and steering at the same time for some reason:

Manual payments at the toll-gate brought a Starlet Glanza V out:

Not quite sure about the wheels, but this late 1960s Gloria looked pretty neat on the run out the Shuto to the Joban:

A bit later a 1600S Corona looked sharp in silver with gray RS Watanabe wheels (a short time later I was passed by a GT5 Corona as well):

Off into Yamanashi, there's some great old stuff to explore. Viaducts for Tokyo water supply, likely built in the 1800s, old shotengai, car yards, restaurants & hotels... An old barber shop:

See ya! Neko.

Your visit at Honda and running with all those other S600 / S800 around the track has me utterly green with envy....

That's pretty neat there Moomin! I wonder if I can drive back there to take more pics... We'll have to do some further exploring down here too - an hour or so out of Tokyo, via the Aqualine, out into the mountains of Boso:

Image

Past overflowing dams from the recent typhoon:

Image

Further, and further away from the city:

Image

Local farmer decorated Mitsu kei:

Image

Through mist covered mountains:

Image

Image

With the sun falling, the crows gathering on a remote bridge:

Image

A hand cut tunnel disappears into the rock:

Image

Bridge over local river:

Image

Local shops, closed for the day:

Image

To a very special location:

Image

Built in Taisho 4 (1916), this minka has been owned by the same family ever since. Until last month, when it was sold to an eager Honda driver and his family for a slow restoration & reform. The previous owner proudly on his new Super Cub (with Fuji Rabbit Touring 150 in the background):

Image

The two naya (barns) are still there, and like the minka will be just enough (as the saying goes):

Image

Slowly restoring shoji, fusuma, tatami, and itado to start (no internal hard walls, just sliding doors of these three types):

Image

Image

It has clay rendered walls, a thatched roof (under the tiles), open wooden beams all the way to the roof, and tatami floors. Desk area:

Image

The views from the property are amazing. Macaque, deer, and tanuki have already been seen, and we're told boar, moles, & snake are also about. Quite a different journey now starting... Neko.

Awesome photos. Even when I'm in Japan, I can't get such a good photographic record of my trip...

You bought a minka on Boso peninsula? Awesome! Are you planning to live there full time, or just visit on weekends / time off?

My parents-in-law live near Kaihin Makuhari (Makuhari Messe), we've been down to Tateyama a few times.

Thanks folks, yes a minka on the Boso Peninsula... We plan to slowly reform it, and to spend time there as a beso on weekends and stuff. South Boso is pretty nice, especially the mountains, and down to Tateyama & over to Kamogawa. We're in the middle of a forest area, so that's pretty neat too. Pity its a bit too far from central Tokyo otherwise we'd be down there all the time. It is however closer to Makuhari - where we have an office as well... Neko.

Yes, congratulations Skorj! That is awesome news about you getting such a wonderful place out in the country. That is the Japan I really like... looking forward to more updates about the minka. :tu:

Minka updates are all over... We bought some boxes of Shikoku hinoki (spruce), and have been replacing some old floors. I did however find a drawing - scale and type matching - of the minka style when it was built:

Image

Image

The toilet has been moved inside, the thatch covered in zinc, and the doma has been floored, but other than that this is how it is now. A previous road here (R122) through Gunma has its destination the mining town of Ashio.

Image

This time we chased a pack of bosozoku up the touge, and they were (relatively) happy to pose. The area though is scattered with numerous explorations.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

We've been back countless times, and on this journey were lucky enough to run with their matsuri. Conveniently towed by a tasteful Land Cruiser:

Image

Stopping for lunch with the bosozoku later in the day, we toured their bikes, and were amused by the kitchen hand's stuffed dog.

Down the road from Ashio? I wonder if these are still present or were torn down:
