Very interesting. I was a bit spooked to see some of the crew in US Marine uniforms in the one photo. I wonder how airship travel would have developed if not for the Hindenburg disaster?

Actually what you saw was probably off duty Marines and Sailors at Lakehurst NAS. The Zeppelins would radio ahead,and give the passengers a grand tour up the East River, across the Bronx so they could see the George Washington Bridge, the South along the Hudson River to see the Palisades and the West side of Manhattan while the off duty "troops" gathered and were instructed on how to grab the frontal tow cables and guide the Zeppelin to its mooring mast. Yes. they got paid for it. My earliest memory was as a baby in the carriage watching the Graf Zeppelin making a left turn over Brook Avenue in the Bronx on its way to Lakehurst. My second view of a real Zepplin was earlier this year when one of the the new Zeppelin toured Los Angeles. By the way, Goodyear is retiring their blimps for new Zeppelins!
