These are some photos of my 1967 1000 wagon. I have had it about 10 years now after my good friend Paul Davies found it whilst he was living in Gladstone north of Brisbane. It turns out that the little wagon has actually returned home, as the key tag and paperwork that came with the wagon showed the original owners address being at Strathpine, just one suburb over from me here at Bald Hills in Brisbane. The story goes that the older owner had the house painted and the wagon was taken as part payment for the job.

This is basically how I got the wagon, this picture taken October 2003 at the Jamboree in Qld. Click on each photo for a larger version.

This wagon, believe it or not, is virtually unrestored. It has had paint repairs on the bonnet prior to my buying it, plus I replaced the seats with retrimed versions from an 800 wagon I had. There is no rust in the car at all, even the floors are completely solid. The side body colour window frames on the 1000 were replaced with chrome units from the same 800, plus I have fitted the wood rim steering wheel and radio from an unbelievably rusty 1000 coupe I wrecked about 8 years ago.

The wheels are Superlites, 13 x 6 and are the only non-standard feature of the car apart from an under dash CD player and speaker.

Looks very nice with those wheels on it!
Would be a shame to butcher it i know, but lowered with 10A bridge port would be pretty cool! :D

I still can't get over how clean this car is, if there ever comes a time that its taking up too much room in your collection Jon a PM my way would sort out that problem. There are a few differences in the engine bay to the 800 I didn't expect to see namely position of battery and ignition coil. Does the 1000 have an electric fuel pump and fuel filter mounted up front? And is that the original position the fuel line comes into the engine bay? As for a 10a in this car, barking up the wrong tree egg.

Yes, engine bay is very different to the 800. The 1000 has a mechanical fuel pump, not electric, which is why the fuel lines go in a different direction. Also has an accelerator cable and not a linkage. The 1000 engine also lost the Hemi design to the cylinder head, nowhere near as revvy as the 800 engine. More of a plodder.

The 800/1000 series was originally destined for larger overseas markets like the US but that didn't eventutate. Hence the column shift and front bench seat arrangement. Many steps backwards from the original R360 and Carol designs as far as technology goes.

According to my old Glass's dealer guides this shape 1000 series (sedan, wagon and utility) was only sold in Australia from May 1967 until June 1968.

Yes, it is a very rare model as it was the transition to the all new body 1000 series released late 1968. Note the unique oval shape Koito headlights, only ever on this model Mazda.
