I used an exporter from japan. It can take awhile to find what you want. Then you are just dealing with pictures. I bought my black 84 from a dealer and spent a lot of money on it. It ends up having a few bad rust spots that were not in the pictures
I have no idea what shipping on a single car is, but I was told around 1400, then add all the fees from the freight companies, I'd estimate at least 3k for a roll on roll off, plus import broker fees. Could range up to 650, then when the usda takes your car off site, you will owe another 100 to 200 for drayage to their warehouse, and then when usda decides my cars are not infested with bugs or are, they either release them, or make you pay more to fumnigate. I also forgot about the 100 dollar xray exam done by customs. I believe that was part of my 650 though,
If you wanna go with a 40ft container and get 4 cars stuffed in it, you are looking at 7100 just in shipping and drayage to portland or. Shipping was only about 3200, the rest were all these bs fees by the freight company.
All in all for my 40ft container with 4 cars, I'm up around 800 I am guessing, unless usda fumigates....
Expect usual importer fees to be something like, 70,000yen for the service, another 70,000 loading fee, plus maybe 20,000-50,000 inland transportation fee. They also include cleaning the car of foreign soil, an deregistration loading etc...
When I bought my last 2 cars the exchange rate was around 75 yen a dollar, OUCH, now it's up around 92, It's slowly getting better.
I plan on importing a few more cars in another year and a half when 89 r32 gtrs come legal. Currently 88 of the month manufactured cars are legal to import under the 25 year law. Future buys are a 83 or so galant sigma turbo, honda city 2 turbo, and, maybe a dr30
Oh and I bought 3 of my 4 cars off yahoo japan auctions. Best place to buy most of the time. The car auctions rarely have many old rarer mitsubishis or other odd makes. Pretty typical to find older nissans though, Goonet is also a great source. Dealer cars mostly, and typically uyou pay more, like I did for my blkack ex1800, but when you want it you want it, and you can often find old cars on it.
I'll post up a writeup on importing after I have my cars safe and it's all said and done along with a review of my exporter
