Hey folks, you might recall last year when I drove a 73 Galant wagon across the country, then swapped a 4G63T into it.

This year I'm driving an 87 4x4 Montero from LA to Indiana, it's got a carb'd 2.6 liter and is soooooo very clean, engine bay is immaculate and looks brand new still, underbody is like it rolled out of a dealer.

I spent the day off roading in the mojave preserve, I'm in vegas now and will be spending some offroad time in red rock canyon tomorrow, then it's off to lake havasu and then phoenix.

I'll try to update when I can, I think a conquest engine will go into this one, if not, likely another 4G63T swap!

Diesel swap. I've got one and it's quite enjoyable.

hey i got some parts from my old Raider maybe your interested.

What kind of parts do you have? This thing doesnt need much but im always on the look out.

diesel would be cool but i think parts wouldnt be so easy to have, where a turbo conquest engine or a 4g63 are a dime a dozen

Red rock canyon off roading, vegas, lake mead, then on to phoenix to hang out at gearbox magazine headquarters, then over to colossal caves in tuscon, gem show, into new mexico. getting there.

I got a bumper/grill guard, oil pan guard and some bits and pieces of interior parts.

ah, dont need any of that, made it almost to nashville TN! Catching some sleep for the night then off to mammoth cave in the morning, then home by saturday night, i hope.

well i've been tuning the carb a little bit here and there, it's never been subjected to cold air, getting it dialed in pretty good, in terms of driving it's good, but it's got some cold start idling issues that i've almost gotten rid of. put a roof rack i had laying around on it and threw a roof basket on it. not sure if I like it, puts the overall height around 7 feet.

Great looking rig! I have an 87 with a g54bt in it on 33 bfg km2 with some toyota shackle lift, roof rack, and soon to be sr rear locker and front arb.

My next swap will be a diesel though. You can pull about 28mpg out of a 4d56, and the reliability is excellent.

Mine isn't as pretty as yours, but I take mine ito anything and everything lol.I wouldnt bother with a 4g63t swap, you will want the extra low end powerband of a g54bt over a 4g63t imo, Especially when going with larger tires. I suppose if you changed the transfer case gearing it would be find, or double transfer cased it.

I'm assuming you would run some toyota trans if you went 4g63t.

Lately I have been thinking about runnign a divorced transfercase like a atlas, in with a starion transmission to beef up my current drivetrain. The stock trans are pretty damn weak.

I just found a 95 SR at the local yard, locking diff is still in it. tempted to pick it up as a spare for my SR but would it fit in the mini montero? I was concerned the width would be a bit more on the full size monty
