Hey all,

I recently bought this CB 626 for $1,000. It has a full service history from 3 month check over in 1981. It has 84,000 origional kilometres on the clock, the paint and body are both in superb condition. Two or three small scratches and dents. Interior is much the same, all seats are clean, no rips, carpet only needed a vacuum, now is immaculate. Origional spare in the boot, looks like the tyre's unused. Factory tool kit all there, good nick.

Engine is a little rough currently, needs new plugs pretty bad. Carb needs a bit of a tune, too, and needs a service, I've been a little slack.

All I've done so far is fit a new steering wheel, as the origional one was pretty gross. I love drifting, have a lot of friends in the sport and have been involved with photographing some of the rounds, so I really like the look of old Datsuns, 'Rollas and such with deep dish steering wheels, so that's what I went for. I'm not sure if maybe it's a little out of place, or over the top..?

I cut the springs, too. Cheapest way to get it lower. It doesn't seem many of you are too worried about how low your cars are, it seems to be farely low on the list of priorities, but it's almost top of mine! Along with wheels! I have some 13x6" Centrelines which I'm currently sanding all the pitting and a few of the shallow scratches out of, before i polish them up and get tyres put on. Was hoping to get some bolt on flairs, but I don't think anyone makes them for 626s? I don't see why they would.

Only other thing is a stereo, as I can't quite deal with the crap on the radio these days.

Looking to finish the wheels and put tyres on in the next few weeks, order some longer wheel bolts and get them on. Fender mirrors, I think will look great.



Bit of a test fit, although pretty terrible, as I don't have any bolts long enough to hold these on yet. And when I jacked up the LCA, it didn't look much better anyway, with no tyres on.



And the wheel.. Interested on what you guys think? Not sure if I like it or not.



This obviously isn't mine, but a great sorce of insspiration. I'm not sure if it's Southrn Fresh creator, Joseph Dale's CB or not, as I thought the article I read about his pictured different wheels.. And it didn't have the headlight tint. Either way, I love this 626, it looks fantastic. Not as a track car, as a daily/cruises.



No rotary for this, maybe do a rotary project in the future, but not at this stage.

With the steering wheel sitting that far out, you would have to have the seat almost all the way back!
These old girls don't give you the room for "deep dish" steering wheels unless you're tall, that way you have the seat adjusted all
the way back and not have your arms all cramped up.

Install your new stereo in your glove box, and leave your centre console area looking stock. Gotta keep it "granny" spec!

Here's some interior pics of my S2 626 coupe. I didn't like the digital stereo in the centre console.
So I moved it to the glove box, refitted an original AM/FM stereo with cassette deck,
and had to replace the centre control fascia(coupe/SDX fascias are silver) because it had been cut to suit. I also had
to make new mounting brackets for the old stereo because the original mounting brackets
had been cut away as well.
I also re-located the Microtech digital dash from sitting inside the ashtray, up to the steering column
housing - made brackets to fit above and below the plastic shroud to sandwich it. Less chance of
cracking the plastic.

Yep, I see what you mean Philip, but if you don't mind me saying, it's a little odd. You didn't like the stereo in the centre, but you've got the big speakers and the sports wheel and everything, ahah. Not saying it doesn't look great man, just an interesting point.

I don't mind the stereo in the centre, I don't think it stands out too much, since the sedan facias are black. The stereo in my Hilux (see RN40 Hilux in Toyota Garage) wouldn't fit in the centre, so that went in the parcel shelf under the glove box. And I know what you mean, I lovelovelove how stealthy it looks. You get the great sound and great music, but you don't have the big, modern, ugly blue and green flashing lights and stuff, right in the centre of all the brown 80sness.

Also, are your speakers in the front there 6"? I removed the kick panel to see how I could mount them and found some little factory 4" ones behind there. So just put some 60w 4" ones straight in, can't even see them.

Also, is yours a rotary?

Car came like that - all modified already, made to show and race by another Taswegian. Big sound system, amps, dvd player in the boot.
Modified dash configuration with the gauges where the centre vents were. It's all black and silver, so everything
matches.

Also what happened with the centre fascia, was that after it was cut to make it all look pretty,
a silver film was stuck across it. This covered the lighter socket and cassette deck recess, and that the demister
button had been re-positioned. In this day and age, you've gotta have a lighter socket whether it's to
charge your phone or run the GPS. I do not even use the stereo, I LOVE the sound of my car!

I will eventually remove most of this stuff and normalise the inside a bit more. I've got spare door cards so I will
eventually get them reupholstered in black vinyl and velour(original S2 626 style), and lose the oversized speakers.
Put speakers back in the kick panels - all my other 626s have been like that.

The seats are waaaay comfy for me, so they are staying!

Ahh, I see. Yeah, I tried to keep it all as standard as I could, other than the head unit. I'll upload a photo of it, so you can see what I mean about it looking standard.

Yeeeessssss! Your car would sound porn. I just can't be bothered with the money and stuff to put a 13B in, only to go through all the trouble of.. Well, a 13B. I hear they're veeeerryy temperamental. What's yours like or consistency? How much power?

I've got to say, for me, this 626 will be a slammed, stanced cruiser. When I get my full licence and have saved a bit, I'll get a skyline. Easy power, good brakes, all that.

I just love driving, looking at, being in, seeing, complimenting and being complimented on old cars! Hahah.

Here you go. 13B secondary bridgeport vs 13B Turbo is like chalk and cheese - BUT, I am VERY fortunate
to be in a position where I can compare the two anytime I like!

The S1 is making 138rwhp at the moment - much bigger carb waiting to be installed.
The S2 is making around 280rwhp - so much better than a kick in the pants!

Edit: lol, I've already seen them both! Pretty rad, I like both of them. Just out of curiosity, what kind of money are you looking at for a 13B-T swap? And are there any crossmembers and things you need to sorce from other cars? And any custom work like having the tail shaft shortened or lengthened?

I have a feeling you rotary lovers may convince me.........

Start saving your money, young man!!!!!!

If you went NA, with a good second hand 12A or 13B with S4 or S5 gearbox and did most of the grunt work yourself,
allow around $6K.

Second hand 13BT with aftermarket ECU plus gearbox plus brake upgrade plus fuel system plus other associated bits approx $12K - 15K!
If you get out of it cheaper, then you've got some extra cash to spend on some other go fast bits.

All bracketry, cross members, exhaust, tailshaft, hoses are custom.

Hahahahahhah. Why do you bother? My older brother only paid $16k to import his 32 GT-R!

Car looks really good, these cars were very highly regarded by the motoring press over here when they were released. It's a shame you don't see more of them in the States.

That stereo is tastefully done! No major "hackage" is always a good thing! Bonus, your 6 is a 5 speed as well!
Why do we bother - because it's different, the 626 is an absolute sleeper and because we can.

You don't see many of them anywhere Cam, I've been through so much of the Internet in the last couple months, but it just doesn't seem to be a largely popular car. Obviously there are a few really cool ones on this forum, but other than that, the only sedan I can remember seeing is the blue one up top.

It is a shame, I read a review on one and they basically said it was cheap and Japanese, so good quality. For a 32 year old car now, mine is quite comfortable, it has a fold down arm rest in the middle of the back seats, a small centre console, reasonably broad self diagnostic system. It's a great car for it's year, having a 323 from the same period, I was really shocked at the difference.

Thanks Plilip! Maybe I shouldn't say this, but if you look closely, one side is a tiny bit higher than the other...

It also took me a very, very long time to measure everything and cut it out.

Yeah, I know what you mean, hahah. I guess you almost just answered 'why do people drive old cars?' As well!

I've already been over there and had a look actually, it's not bad. I quite like it, you post some nice cars. Don't remember seeing any 626s.. Will head over and have a look!

Edit: there are a couple standard looking ones on there, and I quite like that German brochure, hahah. It seems that 'modified' in 626 world just means engine swap.. Fair enough, people lower them a little and put wheels on them, but no major cosmetic stuff. I really like the bolt on flairs look of Celicas, old Carinas, Datsuns, RX3s, Corollas. I've just never seen a CB like that, the blue one up top is the lowest I've ever seen and with the headlight tint, the most cosmetically enhanced.

Not that I don't like the rotaries, or the 626s with them, or anything like that! Don't think I'm hating on them, lol.

Do you have a thread on your Celica at all? I'm in love with TA22s, or any first series Celica, I'd really like to see it?

Hahah. I do like 626s, but I certainly wouldn't say they're perfect from the factory. I'll be so much happier with some really fat wheels on..

Celica is cool man, I like it! Personally, I like the older ones better, the first series Celicas. I know one model is TA22, don't know any others from that series.

Hahah, it must be hard finding things that aren't already on the web. You do post some nice cars though, I am in love with FCs.. Want one so bad. I remember a video on YouTube of a 20B-T and oh - my - god. Did the coolest foot-on I've ever seen. It was black with green lips on the wheels.
