So, i know WHAT these really are, and I know 'how' they are used in regards to our JNCs.
But can someone tell me more...
What are they called in JNC jargon?
What's the story behind them?

Apparently bosozoku gang members would steal them from trains. Obviously, this was illegal and hanging one off your rear bumper was a way of flaunting your law breaking activities to anyone who saw it, including Tha Man.

I don't know what you call them in Japanese though.

Usually on the rear, below the bumper.

Thanks for that picture datsunfreak! I tried to find one but had noooo luck.

I did dig up more info on the darn things though - thanks to the help of my fiancee.

In Yahoo news Japan, someone stole about 20 of them from a train - http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20080 ... 1-yom-soci - wasn't me!

In Japan they are called Tsurikawa - つり革 - (handstrap) or Tsuriwa つり輪 (handring).

Here is the blog of a Tsurikawa Otaku - nothing about cars, just trains and Tsurikawa

And of course you can buy new ones on Yahoo Auction Japan

Oh, and by the way....mine are all gone. I gotta bring back more of these next time I go to Japan!

Wow thanks for the photo! But is that exclusive to Bosos only? I mean can I also put those on my stock Japanese car and not look corny? I think I can source out one or two here in our country cause we have lots of surplus (and running) Japanese buses here :)

Don't think it's exclusive to the bosozoku look, but that's where it started.

they look corny no matter what you're putting them on.

they just happen to fit in with the rest of boso's.

the only time the look good even on a bosozoku ride, is when they are dangling dangerously close to the ground. another supposed reason they are hanging from the tow hook is to display ones shakotan status, i.e. how low your car is. if you look around a lot of brave souls have their cars so low the ring drags and wears away. i did that for about a day and my brand new tsuriwa was cracked!

also you see them hanging off the rear "oh shit" handles inside the car, so your fellow bosozoku can sit on the rear window sills, and lean out the side whilst holding onto the rings. preferably while on the highway, while the driver swerves back and forth. its to feel the rush and the danger of the road.

oh and you can buy tsuriwa's at tokyu hands toy store in japan. ive got three myself at home in FL. heres two new ones.

Very informative thread. Always wondered what those were for exactly. I'd rock one! :D
