Actually, the for sale ad is from 1984. The car new in the late 60s was less than $7000. Although that sounds cheap now, it was more than a new Porsche or Jaguar of the day. Rumor is even at $6800 msrp that Toyota didn't turn a profit. Just sold them at cost to have a "halo" car.

Imagine. Some random dude in 1984 sold Carroll Shelby's 2000GT race car. If he has sat on it for another 15-20 years, he could almost retire on what it's worth...

Thankfully, somewhere along the way someone painted it back to it's original scheme.

Yeah, stuff like that would drive me crazy if I was the guy. It's impossible to know though... I have no idea what car from 2012 would be worth a fortune 30 years from now.
Anyways, I guess being produced in 2K12 itself even lowers the idea of a future rarity. Most cars are mass produced nowadays. They go like hell but a lot of them lack the soul a 'nostalgic' car does.

Few if any cars from 2012 will be worth more than scrap value in 30 years, IMHO. Classic cars, in general, are worth less as a whole than the sum of their parts, with few exceptions. Inflation tends to make it appear like cars are "gaining" in value.

A new 1970 Datsun 510 sold for $1,995 msrp. Adjusted for inflation, that's $11,424.66 in today's dollars. Don't think I've seen one all original version sell for near that yet.

But the 2000GT has gained in value. Adjust for inflation, the 2000GT would sell for $44,625.78 in today's dollars. Since they seem to be selling for $60-100k regularly, they have certainly appreciated in value a bit.

Unfortunately, inflation kills the value of everything. If you assume a constant inflation rate of 2-3% a year, and your savings account conservatively returns 3% a year, your money is actually just stagnant in value just sitting safely in a bank.

Therefore investing in cars and property well earn you more than stocking your money in the bank. The worlds economy ain't pretty atm so we need to find other ways to make good money

But you have to pick the right cars and the right property.

Yes, you must pick exactly the right cars, and also the right time to own them. Other factors include carrying costs, such as warehousing, insurance, registration, and upkeep. In order to retain maximum value, a car both needs to be pristine, and in useable condition - two constraints which do not necessarily harmonize. On the 2000GT, Perhaps you'd pay 1/2% of it's agreed value per year to insure, so that's 5% over 10 years. Plus $100-$200/mo to store it.

At $600K, there's room to make a little money, but you'll owe a good chunk of your upside to the government upon sale, plus whomever buys it will end up paying sales tax as well, causing downward price pressure. Still, better than losing money.
