Well I picked up a 78
Celica coupe. Pretty clean car, no rust, light dents.
I sold my sr20det drift monster kouki 240sx last year
And now I have the itch again. So trying to decide what
Motor setup for this little gem. Any ideas? Want to get
About 200-250 hp , trying to keep the build
Down to just a small fortune! Haha

1uzfe, Beams + blacktop ITBs, 2rz/3rz

thats my short list.

I think 1uz would get you closest to your power goal for the least money.
Beans would be the coolest.

Id say 1uz also but I'm in the process of swapping a 1jz in my '78 celica lb  good luck with your decision I can't wait to see it!

I'm an inline 6 guy but a 3SGTE would be on my list after 1jz, 2jz, 5m and 7MGTE...

Beams all the way, short ratio six speed, reliable, cheap

dunno how set on a yota motor you are but Ive been tossing around the idea of throwing the sr20det that's taking up space in the garage into my 79 celi coupe...ample stock power and easy parts... but not for everyone

what kind of drift car are you building? if it's going to be competitive at all, go with something that is cheap to fix or replace and easy to buy parts for and work on. 1uz would probably be your motor if you wanted to stay Toyota. makes decent power out of the box, more low end, all aluminum so it's still pretty light, there are at least a few places making w and r trans adapter kits, easy to get parts for and find replacement motors in junkyards.

if you're building a car that you're driving for your own enjoyment and drifting for fun, use whatever floats your boat.

JZ swaps would be cool but i don't know how much room you're working with between the firewall and the core support, and from a cost benefit perspective you'll be out of pocket more over time. they're relatively heavy for what you get and hard to make more NA power in, so if you go that route find a $300 NA and slap a turbo on it.

i have a friend with a BEAMS in his corolla that he likes, but even with itb's, custom header and open exhaust, he'd be the first to tell you it wasn't the most practical idea from a cost vs. performance perspective.

3sgte isn't going to be cheap or easy either, but you get boost in a smaller package. dollar-for-dollar, since you're going to have to fab/adapt to install it anyway, you might be better off with an SR20.

had a friend with a second-gen lb that had an RZ motor in it that he used to drift. they're unkillable but they don't have a lot of knowledge and support behind them compared to your other choices. in my area the only places you'll find them will be in complete sets from junkyards that charge too much. so there's that to consider.

A Beams would be a nice motor. Think it's 170 hp factory for the black top.

One idea I have been throwing around for my corolla is a 5vz-fe, but there is no real info in swapping in the v6.

3tc turbo, pro's= torque and reliable and cheap! Less moving parts and the motor loves boost!
