What went wrong is that I ran out of time... I had been working on the car by myself for many weeks leading up to the race... The car was still not running when I left for Houston on Friday 9/28... Dennis from Ratsun helped me EVERY DAY during the last week before the race by wiring the entire car himself.... Without Dennis' help,.. the car would have never made it to the track.
We had a major timing issue (mostly my fault), and it took several tries to get it figured out... We had to re-stab the oil pump & make sure TDC was correct... (lesson learned)
We finally got the car running correctly on Saturday afternoon, but by that time it was too late to make any laps... On Sunday morning we had to go thru Tech 4 different times before they would let us on track... Small things needed to be fixed (exhaust was too low, etc, etc, etc..)
Finally got the car on track Sunday afternoon,.. made 3 laps,.. the car starting running rough... I took it back to the pits... Apparently, the Alternator had worked itself loose, & shredded the belt... Put on a spare belt... tightened all hoses, clamps, nuts, bolts, etc... & sent it back out...
By that time,... there where only 3 laps left in the race,... but we took the checkered flag!!!
Considering that this car had not been driven in nearly 20years... & we got it running & driving on track.... Well, I consider that a huge WIN,... and the LeMons judges regonized us for all our hard work & the car's utter 80's uniqueness...
