Not all of us are like that in Aus but i know what you mean.I would restore every thing to stock but put in a 12a briggy.

While that would be cool we only got a thousand of these or so in the US, and only in the northwest. To see one of these in the northeast is beyond shoocking. Convincing Stationwagonguy to eventually sell it to me has become an all-consuming obsession. :lol:

Mild update- tried to start it last night, but showed up in the darkness, grabbed the wrong battery (already dead), and discovered the battery cable ends are pretty chewed up. Did get it to crank very slowly (battery dead) after jumping it with a friend's truck... which ended up killing his alternator (oops!). Did manage to turn the radio on, the backlight popped right on and it sounded really good and clear (AM only). So that was kind of neat. Did not hear the fuel pump go on at all though, but it barely had any power either, so who knows.

This is true. Every time I see this car I almost break down, it's so beautiful. There's just something about it. Here are some photos. I love this thing to death. If I had the money I'd keep it completely stock and restore it to factory spec. <3

Mild update, did manage to actually get it to run on ether. Sounds ridiculously quiet, like a sewing machine. Seriously. We weren't certain it was actually running. It isn't getting fuel though.

Next project is to move it somewhere safer- where it's currently stored, two cars had windows bashed out this week- a Z31 and a very nice XR4Ti, so I'm worried that the Mazda is next.

There's a possibility I may sell it, only because I don't have the funds to really dedicate to it and it's not exactly what I was looking for, and I hate to treat a car like this like a redheaded stepchild when it's the most interesting car I own, but no garage and several more emotional-attachment projects are ahead of it... and my desire to own another 1st gen Celica isn't waning either. UGH.

Honestly, if it's not really your cup of tea then I say sell it, but to another local enthusiast.

Just remember you may not find another one, but if your really not that into it then it is better off in someone's hands that love/lust them.

Supposed to have a friend go with me to tinker with it in the morning... unfortunately it's dropped 15 degrees in a day and it's raining. :/ We'll see how this pans out.

So... it runs.

New fuel pump installed, courtesy of Pertano, bought some NGK plugs, new plug wires (ordered... wasn't in stock), got an oil filter, drained some of the old gas (it was orange... but there were no chunks of anything in it, and the filter is still clean), unstuck the throttle linkage, and took it for a spin. Brake booster isn't working, it begins to sputter in gear after it's been running like 20 minutes (but only under load- toss it in neutral, revs happily again). It blew nasty black smoke for about 20 minutes and now it's not smoking at all, haha. Won't shift into second easily, haven't had it going much faster than that.

Next to-do:

Plug wires, possibly a cap & rotor if I can find one
Coil (thinking that's the misfire under load)
Oil & filter
Coolant drain
Possibly change the trans fluid- I had a similar problem with my '78 Impala which sat about the same length of time, and new fluid got it working fine again.

Hopefully a video will pop up soon.

New plug wires, fuel filter, and an oil change today (new filter & Rotella). It's not running any better, it still cuts out and sputters a whole bunch, though it runs awesome for fleeting moments and idles fine. None of this has stopped all bystanders from begging to drive it or go for rides down the street and back... and then followed with everyone offering me cash for it.

I've never, ever, ever, ever had anything people wanted to buy from me so badly. And I'd have never imagined that people would fall in love with a 40 year old Mazda as much as they do.

I'm thinking that I've either got a clogged fuel pickup (doesn't really seem likely, it's not constant) or a bad ignition component (probably the coil). Maybe the carb needs a rebuild, but I feel like it would be a more constant issue.

Also, "Sukiyaki" came on the AM oldies station in the car while cruising around. I felt it was appropriate, haha.

Another issue I noticed while poking around- the vacuum advance isn't getting any vacuum. I unplugged it from the carb and heard no rpm drop, and felt no vacuum from the carb. Not sure if I should be concerned or not, but I feel like it might be a slight issue. The brake booster is definitely receiving vacuum though, so I'm not sure why it isn't working. It did function ONCE today, for one stop, and went back to not working once again. Ugh.
