Anyone here done a 1u into an E7?

Hey guys and girls, just looking for some guidance. I have done some pretty extensive swaps, but direct experience with the project at hand is always nice. I have the added benefit that I can fab most things myself too.

So here's what my plan is (feel free to suggest otherwise)
First off I'm going to get an early ls400 write off since they're dirt cheap
-USDM first gen 1u(has much beefier rods) with custom headers and obx itb's (nice upgrade and easiest way to ditch emissions trash.)
-W58 with 1u trans adaptor, and matched flywheel and clutch
-wilwood clutch pedal/master w/remote res
-stock ecu with reflash to accommodate itb's and exhaust
-mk1 supra rear end w/ 2 way of some sort
-driveshaft matched to rear end and w58
-Aaand custom trans/motor mounts.

At that point I'll probably work out all the bugs once it's running then toss some bigger brakes on/wilwood master.
I appreciate any ideas or suggestions, as for application...the car's going to be a daily with weekend track duty. That said Im still 27 years young and don't mind a rough ride.

Nice one man. It seems pretty straightforward.. If you can, pick up a write off. Also I'm going to ditch the itb's based on wanting to keep things simple as I want it to be reliable. I've had trouble finding mounts, but they're the easiest thing to make yourself. And there are 650 dollar kits that get you a bell housing, clutch and flywheel that mate to the w58.

The wiring is also straight forward too. If you do pick up a 1u... Get a first gen 89-95 I think. The engine was just generally stronger in most aspects.

This is assuming the E7 has the same basic layout as an AE86

LS400 1U came with the front sump which will clear your cross member.

AE86 cross member modified for 1U

Chop off stock motor mounts and using square steel tubing, welded in place as new motor mounts.

Also had to drop the cross member 1.5 inches down for engine head clearance. Had aluminum block spacers and ran extended bolts. (Temporary fix)

stock LS400 exhaust manifolds will not clear

stock SC400 exhaust manifolds will

W58 will fit in the transmission tunnel

I think some major cutting might be need to the fire wall and trans tunnel. I have seen Chevy and Ford small blocks swapped into this chassis. Classic American v8 with a carb would be the easiest to wire in. For my te72 I'm swapping a ka24de with a truck transmission backing it up.

No cutting is necessary!! You need to make 1.5" spacers for your subframe

Look for Joshs AE86 1UZ build on Club4ag.com - The same rules will apply or wait until late November and I will show you pics of my '95 1uz in a '80 TE72 with a 8.8" rear end and a W58 trans (R154 is out of my budget and I will regret this later) :tu:

Firstly, thanks for all the links guys

Looks like I'll probably be hitting Xcessive up shortly.

Lloyd's car, as well as the boys from motorfix have been a pretty big inspiration for this build.

I think in the interim I will space the subframe down but will weld one out of HSS when I have the time that lowers the engine mounting and modifies the suspension geometry to accommodate for the car being low.

As for the w58: It's nice to know it fits the tunnel without mods. I really didn't feel like cutting it. (Originally I was going to do a 13bt in this car, but RE trannies are the size of a house).

Also, I didn't know that about the manifold clearances. Good to know since I thought neither would fit. Saves me time and monies! Weee.

The w58 fits, but the LS400 bellhousing will take some massaging of the trans tunnel if I remember correctly...
But all you need for that is a sledgehammer and some patience (this is key, you dont need to go ape shit on it).

The 1uz will not sit well with your current steering box setup (unless you have an '83 which most had rack and pinion steering)
So, other things to add to your list:
AE86 or '83 "AE" chassis crossmember (rack/pinion version) or weld some tabs onto your existing member

AE86 Steering column or from the '83
Mk3 Supra steering joint
AW11 manual steering rack

Two more things:
1. keep your eye out for some FC RX7 4 piston calipers at the J-yard and get the bracket to mount them and mini cooper rotors from a member on Club4ag,

2. I wouldnt waste the money or time on finding the Mk1 supra rear end-
Solution: Ford Explorer 8.8" rear end- you will have to have to driver side narrowed to match the width of the passenger, then you can get another passenger side axle and use it. A lot of the 8.8" come with LSD's already,good gear selections stock (3.73 or 4.10)

I purchased my 99 Explorer 3.73 LSD rear end @ Pick N Pull on Thanksgiving morning 50% off with the spare axle for just over $75 and our local rear end shop quoted $150 to narrow the axle and another $200 to remove and add the TE72 suspension mounting brackets.
Then add a C-clip eliminator kit, maybe a girdled diff. cover and you have a bulletproof rear end for about what your going to spend on the stock supra rear, give or take.

Let me know if you have any questions, I have put countless hours researching this swap for my TE72. Also, early model Tundra/Sequoia headers work with a little change to the collector position (pics of this to come

Thanks Phil. I forgot about posting that but was expecting it. To remedy that issue I'm thinking of doing an 86 powered rack with an SW20 elec. PS pump. The exploder rear is a great idea too. Also, FC 4 pots I rarely see around here so I suppose I'll just import some from jland. Who's the member on C4A if you don't mind me asking?

haha ok good to know. Sad news however. I have some medical issues, and need a bone marrow transplant.. weeeeew! ugh. anyways, I picked up a 4a last week with shot rings, tore it apart. I'll wing it in once i'm out of treatment so I can get around and continue amassing parts for the 1u at once I'm working again.

Anyone here done a 1u into an E7?
