Hi everyone,

My name is Dave and I've been into the classic 60's muscle scene for a lone time now but I've just recently procured a 1978 Celica GT 5 speed! I'm new to classic Japanese cars so if anyone has any particular resto tips for a second gen Celica I'd love to hear them. I'm good with metal work so the rust isn't an issue. Tuning the 20R, however, is a different story. The in-tank electric fuel pump was dead when I pulled the car out of the weeds (where it'd been sitting for 10+ years), so I replaced it with an aftermarket one that I spliced into the system. It now runs but I'm pretty sure it needs new rings because it smokes pretty bad. It only has 90k though so I really don't thing the rings should be that worn already. Anyway, let me know what you think! I know not many people see a lot of potential in second gen Celicas but I see an awesome car under the rust and dirt. I'll put some pictures of my last project too.

You have them uploaded here or through a 3rd party site like photo bucket?

Upload them to imageshack.us, then copy & paste the forum code here. Can't wait to see your second gen.

Oil control rings could be "stuck" from sitting for so long? Or valve stem seals leaking? Done a compression test yet?

No I haven't torn into the engine yet at all. I was told by the previous owner that it needed rings and it does smoke so..?

I'm just saying there are a lot of things that can cause an engine to smoke besides just rings. All easier to fix than rings as well.

And a compression test will usually reveal if the rings are shot, so...

Nice 2nd gen, it looks pretty straight, my 78 liftback has rust in almost the exact same spots lol good luck with the build!

Thanks! I'm probably going to rip out the interior of the Celica soon. Thinking about leaving it carpetless. Thoughts anyone?
