I know that the 4M is not the fastest pony in the stable but I like the idea of keeping a car period correct. I guess that comes from my hotrod background. I am trying to find out some info about building the 4M. I know it will never be a high HP motor but short of swapping it for something else what build options are out there? I'm not looking to roast my tires but would like to get on the freeway and pass traffic without hesitation. Beyond a custom multi carb intake and headers what else would/could you do?

I have already tried searching the forums and have not found much info.

I feel ya. Mine is fuel injected. I want to rebuild it but don't know of any good power options. I may just do a complete original rebuild.

In japan i have seen period correct triple side draft intakes. Yes they are not fast but i like your style. Look up mooneyes japan site for pics of cool crowns

Besides headers, and carbs... you can likely have the cam hard welded and re-ground. The Toyota intake and exhaust ports of the day really are quite poor, sensible porting* could allow it to breath MUCH better.

You also can have the block decked some, this should raise compression a decent amount

Exhaust is the biggie for these things. I put a 2 1/2" on mine and let it breathe, and it's been great. Also flat top pistons to raise the compression but good luck finding some. Rear end gearing and a manual transmission helps too.. Just makes it a little more fun.
