I saw 2 cars under tarps in someones side yard today.
I stopped to leave one of my WANTED flyers I keep handy.
The guy came out and I asked about the mazdas.
Then he says its one he brought back from Japan in the 80's when he was in the military. All original.

I did not get to see it ,it was heavly tarped and he just had back surgery. :(

I asked about the engine and he just said rotary.
I will have to go back and butter him up and see if I can get some pics. and more info. What should I look for? :tu:

Rust around the rear window is a killer on early rx7's. The also go at the back of the front guards. If it has a sun-roof chances are it will be leaking. Also make sure the fuel gauge works as these also tend to give up the gjost rather quickly. If it runs obviously do a compression test, and check for general wear and tear... And rust. Mazda's come standard with rust straight from the factory. Rust rust and probably some more rust.

But really we all just want to see some pictures

OK so I think I need to check for rust.

I thought he said first year 1977 but ya probably 1978.
Unless Japan had it a year sooner than the U.S., like the 1968 Corolla.

This will probably not be a purchase for me,he said he was going to keep and restore.

Is the engine anything special that the U.S. did not get?

I will try to get back and get pics. once he is up and around from his surgery.

Hope he revives it. Atleast on the top of the car it appears to only be surface rust, except for the archs.

Wow, it looks like an abused and mistreated heap of crap. What a shame. it doesn't look at all worth saving. Lucky rx7's are still a dime a dozen I guess. I know I have sent sa22c's to their death in far better condition...

Sad to see.

Hopefully it can provide some parts to prolong another rx7's life.

That was the first time in 3 years the tarp was off.
Rust and rot was present.

He had had some bad luck with the car and had gotten hit twice in 3 months by
2 different trucks. That was when he stopped driving it.

It is what it is. :tu:

I don't foresee that car ever being repaired. Sad really, as it is super rare as an early RHD Savanna, but in my opinion it is probably too far gone to save. I would love to take some of the parts though to make a RHD one of my own. I love the early 78 cars like the one I have, but the RHD makes it even cooler.

He should just buy a parts SA RX7 and either use it for the body panels if that car has a lot of sentimental value to him, or just swap all the cool JDM stuff to the other shell. There are enough out there that it shouldn't be too hard.
