Been looking for an MX32 project car. Something to really strip down and rebuild. Found one around here, but apparently it's rusted quite a bit in the few months in been in storage (sea air). What do you guys think based on these pics? Dead car walking or is it worth a two hour drive to inspect further? Looking at some of gashes, I'm pretty sure it's too far gone, but I wanted some second opinions just to be sure.

It just looks like a lot of surface rust. As long as the frame, trunk and floorpans are in good shape I would consider the 2hr drive to look at it. Ask if he can send pics of those then you can make a judgement on it.

Followup question.

Assuming a lot of the trim and a few interior bits are salvageable but the bulk is scrap, what is it worth? Looks like it has a lot of solid bits to part out and I think I can get it reeeeeally cheap. Also, it actually runs, but has a bum transmission. I mean, what is a car typical worth scrap-wise?

Well a lot of thr small trim pieces might be sourceable. Esp from out west. Trans might be a little diff to find to replace but I know they are out there. If you wanted to scrap it you might get 3-400 from a junkyard if it runs but something that old and rare shouldnt be in a junkyard.

I just got an 85 Supra and those are known for rust problems and mine is no exception. There are a couple rot thru places to fix and a lot of little surface rust spots coming through. Im sure I could have parted it out for a lot more than I paid for it but it isnt that hard for me to do the body work. Just takes time, effort and deternimation. My Datsun is sitting idle till I rebuild the extra motor I got and swap them. Just have to find the time. Old J-Tin is hard to find so when something comes up, it should be grabbed. IF That cressida is running and just needs a trans I would hang onto it. It has lot of potential.

I just feel like the rust around the driver's taillight and in the damage on the hood is too ominous...

I think I can get it for 450-500 all told.

Up here in the northeast that car would be advertised as rust free. I don't see any rust in those pictures that would scare me away.

It might be worth worth your time to look at it. it looks very much like just surface rust. It depends it there are a lot of holes and how much metal is left. See if you can get some more pics or look at it in person. make sure the floors and the bottom of the rockers and quarter panels are in good shape.

Looks like mainly just surface rust, but she's got a lot of history. I would clean up the interior and make sure the floors and structure are ok and then just leave it all there. I love cars with their original history.

sub 600 buy it immediately, the fact that it's close to you driving time makes it worth it, or else your be kicking yoru self for the rest of your life about not going to see/buy it. I'm in Southern california An hour and a half east of Down Town LA me and my friends drove up 4 1/2 hrs to get this Subaru GCF 1997 white, 2.2L, 5-speed. Chick was so damn pissed when we got there asking why she got over 40 calls that day on the car, people form Los Angles to Berkely/ San Fran. Rare car is a rare car.

I raced one sunday morning to get my Starlet, one hour away doing 85 the whole way and $800 later i got a complete not running '84 KP61
