... twin-cam Hakos are nice (plus they come with sexy tako), early rotaries OK, even 2000GTs rev out OK, but damn does an S800 sound wicked as it approaches 9500 rpm... Screaming around Yokohama in a roadster this weekend, I fell in love all over again.

More where that came from too! Neko.

Kinda jealous over here! While hardly as exotic, I'm a big fan of the 6 cyl L series engine sounds and the sound from the 7M. It's hard to beat the sound from an I6.

Once I get to hear my 20V 4AG at full song, I may add that to the list, though. :D

...Even with a big exhaust, I always seem to think the noise from an inline six is too smooth, and quiet  Especially when muffled by a turbo. Not that I'm overly concerned with sound; I like straight six smoothness, and it's definitely my favorite engine configuration.

Pushrod, crossplane US V8 rumbles sound best to me though, Ford small blocks probably sound best on average from my experience. And yet I have no interest in those engines.

^That sound is actually the supercharged 1.5 litre BRM V-16, not the H-16, the youtube link is wrong. Bit of research wouldn't have hurt the uploader, lol. The H-16 in actuality sounds rather like two flat-plane crank V8s.

I think the finest sounding six by a long margin is the M88/1 3.5l straight six in the BMW M1 Procar. 470hp and well over 9000rpm. Has a bass note to it and a metallic growl that L and S-motors just don't.

Inside (the 3.5CSL Gr.4 and two M1s at 3:10 is a pretty awesome sound):

And out:

The Can-Am era 'stock' block based V8s were pretty brutal too (money is at 0:35):

If those don't stir you, check your pulse.

Beyond that, in the realms of things mere mortals can own, a tough L28 or stout 2T-G is about as good as it gets.

Does it have to be automotive related? If not, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljUgK3Rd ... AAAAAAAAAA Pretty much take your pick. 4000 hp always sounds good no matter how you get it. Or Here, less hp, and far more stock, but you really can't beat the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin Supercharged V12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5fjKEXX ... re=related

As for automotive motors, I'm partial to the sounds of a V12. That said, a well tuned L series is music at high rpm, a little like ripping silk. Straight 6s do sound sweet. I'm also partial to a hot Nissan U20 being rung out. The sound of the carbs sucking down air paired with a good exhaust is pretty sweet.

I´d say the Subaru Leone with EA81 or EA82 engine has the best sound:

Leone FTW!
