Today i visited Ruedi Schnüeriger, former head of the http://www.datsun-z-club-schweiz.ch/, to pick up a used, but cheap genuine datsun rear wing:


As you can see it needs new screws, a bit of sanding and new paint, but otherwise it's in great condition


Sadly his Zed was underneath a winter-Pjama, so i wasn't able to see much of it, but outside is the son's latest Z-car project. A black 240Z. The project hasen't really stated yet and needs some work to get the proper look again - typical swiss 70/80ies style Z with rear louvres, massive vented hood and widened fenders (steel job in this case). like the wheels, forgot to take a closer look at them...

Thanks Ruedi and his son for the short chat about the club and cars. Hope to see them soon again. And of course i will need to get a Z-club member as soon as my car is closer to a complete car

When cleaning my house lately i found an old drawing i made during army-time at one of these boring hours. Must have been a few years ago i drew this, but somehow i still like it. that was probably short after i fell in love with 240Z's and planned to buy one in future

So after i got my new delfir-chips i decided to make a little how-to:

1) Add Delfilr-chips and the parts you want to clean-up into the tumbler:


2) Add water (water 1:4 delfir chips ratio), and 2-3 drops dish washing fluid:


3) add a bit of random grease to one of the screws (this will give all the parts inside a thin grease cot which prevents it from immeadiatly starting to rust!, you will need to bath them in grease remover before giving the parts to the galvanizing-company!!)


4) Put lock on the tumbler, let it run


5) wait. have a beer meanwhile. check progress after about 8-12 hours


6) wait another 12 hours. have another beer if you want check again, and after totally 24 hours it should look like this: almost perfect:


7) Extra tip: be sure to not run the process in a garage with -15° Celsius. this will make the water freeze even when the machine is running

well done!
screw looks good .. only last thing which I would do is to refresh the thread

i made another attempt without frozen water *lol* the problem was the water was frozen intto the screws threads. when i did the same thing in the warm, the threads where also clean inside. So they're perfect now for getting them to the zinc-plating company

i can imagine the zinc plating company will have a big bath with some sort of acid were they just dip in eveything they are about to zinc coat.
wouldnt that be a lot easier and quicker and only cost a few bucks extra?

or am i missing the point of doing everything you can by yourself?

the local plating company told me to bring the parts as clean as possible, because otherwise there would be too much dirt in their acid bath at the end and they would have to replace the acid afterwards and that would be expensive. and of course i like to do as much as possibly by myself to learn about these processes

Nothing big today either, just started to sand down the wing i bought recently.

after 1,5 hours sanding by hand - one side done (still need to do the rear side,
but don't have any feeling in my arms anymore, so decided to quit )


Sadly figured out it was broken and fixed once in the past, but not a too big problem:

Actually we have the coldest temperatures since 30 years or so, i don't really live in a cold part of switzerland so this is really untypical

Not sure which way of death to choose:
freezing to death or dehydrating and getting bite by something poisonous..
but hey - sanding stuff by hand keeps you warm

Im in love...
With my brand new NOS (New old stock) Watanabe-RS (Japan) "Falcon" steering wheel.
It's kind of the "holy grail" of vintage japanese sports steering wheels:


A little investigation at rs-watanabe and i figured out only 250 of these were ever made by watanabe around 1985 - so awesome i found a unused one

After another 1,5h sanding by hand out in the cold garage finally the wing has no mor old rattle-can paint left


Also got those old emblem-pins out. Now only need to replace the broken screws then it's done

Progress is looking good... are you interested in selling that Falcon?

Can't be happier! Usually good and simple plans never work as i thought, but this time it worked very well. istead of sourcing some new JDM Fairlady fender mirrors i decided to buy sume used ones, but these were too damaged, so i bought a set of New 510Mirrors which seemed to be actually the same, just with a shorter base-mount. i decided to swap the old 240Z base to the new 510 Mirrors to have some kind of new 240Z mirrors:
1) before - you can see how the 240Z base is longer compared to the 510 (left)


2) Disasembled everything:


3) and interchanged the two base mounts:


5) Fits perfectly!! even the 510 Plastic piece on the bottom-end fits perfect to the 240Z Base mount:


So these parts will get a proper sandblast and black powdercoating soon (And also will have to swap over that base mounting screw...)

nice job nils,i like those mirrors.i also have a set for my c30.well do you have this black "rubberplateseal" thing beetween the mirror and fender for all your mirrors?is there one for sale maybe??

Hey stev, actually i only have a set for the 510, these where complete, with the orange 240 parts all the installation hardware was missing, the glasses where broken and not a lot was usable, therefore i decided to go for a set of 510 mirrors.. sorry

no problem mate,i think i will build 2 of them.maybe with my dremel;-)

or just buy some cheap replica mirrors on ebay and take the parts from those..

Nothing big today, just removed those ball joint mounts so i can get them sandblasted and powdercoated soon:

Your Watanabe wheel looks great! Doesn't it have an interesting profile/shape to the rim? Keep the posts up, it's fun to watch your car come together.
