My dad taught me to driby putting me in a huge open field in his hummer turbo diesel.... I was 8, sound scary to see? Let's face it with a 0-60 time of almost never I was no danger to anything in that beast. Was hilarious once I started listening to his directions he taught me about approach angles for huge rocks and stuff. Then he let me drive in a parking lot. When I was driving for my permit practice hours I drove a landcruiser

Same here almost,lol. I was about 8 or 9, in a cow pasture in a '53 Willy's M38A1 Military jeep.

Ok, I don't have a picture of my first car but it's a 1979 Ford Fairmont Futura. When I lived in Yakima, Washington. Grey exterior, red vinyl interior, working 8-track player with 3 8-track tapes. (Ohio Players / Hawaii 5-O soundtrack / The Graduate soundtrack).

Awesome space ship in the background, even if the Fairmont in the foreground is... Perhaps one would say, more "Mac and Me" than "Empire Strikes back"

I know people do crazy things with any Fox-body, but I'd be extraordinarily impressed if I saw one bone stock, in mint condition.

Learned to drive + Learned stick + First car (drove all through high school) = '79 Datsun 210 sedan baby poo brown

Wish I still had it, but mainly for sentimental value...

Funny that I learned to drive in that car in '88, so at the time it was just a regular 9-year-old used car. Now it's an antique. Damn I'm getting old...

When my dad traded in the old '66 Mercury wagon I learned to drive in, he got a '78 Zephyr Z7 which is the Mercury version of the Fairmont Futura. Ours was light blue with a dark blue interior. Just like the wagon, this car was for my mom to drive. All us kids were pretty much grown up with cars of our own, so she didn't need something so big. My dad bought it based on my recommendation, which really impressed me at the time. A couple of months after we got it my mom flew home to visit her mom. While she was gone, my dad took it to a body shop to have a pop-open sunroof installed (because that's what you did with your new car in 1978.) He didn't tell my mom anything about it. He just drove the newly sunroofed car to the airport when she came home for a big surprise. She loved it and drove it with the sunroof popped open as much as she could.

Kind of sad to hear that so many of these cars have since met their demise, but equally neat to hear a lot of you guys now own the cars of your youth!

I learned on my dad's 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass in about 2005 (same color and wheels as below). A gussied-up Malibu, it was a boring car. It ultimately started showing rust and got rear ended and totaled with my mom driving a couple years later.

Image

I first drove stick with my grandpa's (at the time) 1965 Ford F100. I kept stalling it, and instead of learning to drive stick instead learned how to install a new pushrod  (it was broken before I got to it) When my grandparents moved to a townhouse they gave it to me! <3

Actually learning how to drive stick was accomplished when I bought this 1981 VW Rabbit Convertible from my uncle out in Denver. Learning stick on mountain roads can be tricky!

Image

Well the truck now is cleaned up a bit

Image

And the Rabbit was intimately involved with a Saturn Outlook in late 2009 so I replaced the front with one from a square headlight '79 sedan. It's one of three 'verts in the world with early squares! I also lowered it with some other goodies.

1987 Honda Accord Hatchback - 5-speed manual transmission, dark blue in color - paid $1200 and sold her a year later for the same price.

Probably looks like this today if it's anything like the other Hondas I've owned:

The popular and highly sought after wagon right now are the awd civic wagons but I would totally love to see a Tercel wagon modded in good taste. I think all Tercel wagons are awd too. Totally underrated car.

Learned stick in my uncles t100 on desert dirt roads at age 12 or something.
Learned to parallel park in my parents 92 suburban.
Learned how to haul ass in one of these bad boys (3 L 5cyl turbodiesel).

My dad made biodiesel at the time, so it was a perfect excuse to go drive in canyons and on mountains. Gotta love growing up in Northern AZ. Actually spun it one morning on an icy switchback and managed to pull off the perfect recovery. Pretty cool maneuever when you're 17...

I guess the first one I actually drove was my friend's dad's '79 chevette 4-dr hatchback. light blue, and with a little chrome air cleaner poking through the hole in the hood. it had a 229 v6 from an 81 monte carlo shoved in it. my buddy and I got to beat it around the yard. the first one I learned to drive a stick in was his mom's '87 s10, originally a 4cyl., but when the engine gave up, they put a 2.8 in it.

Pains me to see one like that :( Well, the car I learned to drive in is the same JNC I drive today, which happens to be a 1987 Accord.

Learnt to drive in Dad's bright yellow '80 Mitsu L200 farm ute with a 4G52 and 4-spd column shift manual as soon as I could reach the pedals, I think I was 7?
First car was an '80 Datsun Sunny sedan with an A15, 4spd, choppies and 13x7 Hotwires.
