about one year ago i bought this beautiful sleeping fairlady:


And a year later? that's how she looks now:


Completely stripped bodywork, interieur, suspension, engine, wiring, ... every damn nut!




And i got a lot of new, used and refurbished parts ready for re-assembly:




So what are my plans for 2012?
- i definitly plan to buy some key-parts soon that will let me continue work at a few points.
- i will need to save a LOT money for the body- & paint-shop and hopefully get the car there.
- i plan to buy a lot of replacement bodypanels so the bodyshop can start directly and don't need to create or source parts..
- also i plan to get some more suspension parts and exterior parts (Mirrors, etc..) prepared and refurbished so they're ready for getting reinstalled.

at this point i can't do too much anymore until the chassis is ready, so progress may slow down a bit on the work, but i try to save every penny, so i have a completely restored and repainted, rustfree and aligned chassis end of the year 2012 so i can hopefully get it assamled through 2013 well we all know plans change from time to time...

"Same procedure every year, James" Yeah. It seems like december is the most busy time of the year here. All this gift-shopping, pre-christmas-stuff, end-of-the-year-meetings and Business-dinners. This and the fact my appartement-mate is moving out and i have to get a lot of stuff done as well as i just started at a new job 4 weeks ago keeps me a bit off the project right now, but i try my best to keep it going. I think there will be more updates again soon
Today i got at least a bottle of DOT3 brake fluid, but not for the brakes, but for removing old paint from all the screws and stuff.

Also a lot of rare and cool genuine datsun parts are waiting for me to pick them up.

I joined just so I could follow this thread. This looks great! Keep up the excellent work!

Felt a bit sorry for the lack of updates during the last few weeks. So i decided to at least get all done i could do right now:
Drop the scews in a bowl full of DOT3 brake fluid. we'll see tomorrow if paint is gone

You should seach for some one who does Zink treatment on the bolts / parts. These people ussualy have Acid bath's that remove everything from metal (rust / paint and etc)... Its aint costs a fortune - and result on the bolts / brackets and all the other small parts is stunning

You tryed soaking bolts in the 646 Solvent / reducer? Usualy this thing takes all the paint out easily Or just simple paint remover

Of course i already looked for some zinc plating company and found one near me, but the asked me to bring the parts completely ready to plate. means with paint and rust stripped and completely degreased. will need to check if i'm able to do this on my own...
And yeah paint remover is of course also a solution but thought i'd try the brake-fluid version first, read about this in different oldtimer tech tips

Just a little update: the Brake fluid paint removal trick doesn't work. soaked stuff over night, but after brushing about 15minutes paint still was there. i think i need something more agressive and wonder why i ever thought this will work great

because if you spill brake fluid on your painted car the paint falls of instantly..

yeah the project has been a bit on hold during christmas holidays, but it seems to get better now got some parts today:

Yepp - a full NOS Set of brand new Nissan Fender mirrors. they where sold as C10 skyline mirrors but i think they come from a 510 Datsun.
Now you might wonder why i bought these?
The thing is genuine 240Z / Fairlady mirrors are hard to find or very expsensive, and these are exactly the same with only one difference, the mirror-base has a different length:

So when i found these on yahoo auctions japan for 75$ (complete set) i decided it's best to get these and interchange the bases. because i definitly want the taller genuine fairlady bases. it's those details that make a restoration perfect
I'm really happy now, got all the installation hardware, complete new mirror including the convex mirror glasses, new rubber seals, etc. and they really look sexy

i am from switzerland as well and coincidentially your project caught my attention when i googled something Z-body panel related. i think what you do is pretty bad ass. you should keep on doing it, expecially as apparently you have the swiss version of the car. keep up the good work!!!
i have a bone stock early 1971 series one 240z, imported from the USA this year. mr. petitjean got it ready for switzerland, as i don't have many tools and rather little time. it passed inspection with veteran vehicle status. but it's in a heated garage now as i don't drive it in the rain or when the streets have been salted. anyways...maybe we can go for a ride some day. your project rocks, keep it up! i bet it will be awesome and i wish i had the skills to do that hands on work and build it myself! respect, it will be a beast!

Today i visited Heiko from http://www.Datsun.ch to pick up set of 240Z taillights for my Fairlady project:


But - how should i say - what i found there is probably the biggest collection of datsun stuff i've ever seen. he currently stocks four classic Datsun's in his garage:


1) A beautiful and rare swiss-market 260Z in totally mint "out-of-the-showroom-floor" condition


2) a really nice swiss-market 240Z in great shape...


3) A absolutly sexy Fairlady SR311 with hardtop he lately imported from the Netherlands:


4) and another classic fairlady which is currently undergoing the most detailled and expensive restoration i've seen in real life so far:


but not only does he have a nice collection of cars (and owned even a few more in the past), but does he also have a huge knowledge regarding Datsun's and tons of NOS and used spareparts, memorabilia and diecast cars stocked in his whole house




what you see here is only a little part of all that stuff. some really rare stuff too!



need some mint dashboards, anyone?


If you own a Datsun and live in switzerland i highly recommand to contact and visit heiko one day, not often you meet nice guys like him these days! Next week or so i will visit another datsun nut to pick up some more needed parts. so stay tuned

haha yeah, they exchanged their fairlady's Heiko's red Fairlady is now in the netherlands and he got got the black one from him istead. the black one was in better condition but the guy in netherlands prefered the red one from switzerland (it's a quite rare model: old chassis with new egine, only very few where made of these before the changed the chassis as well )
