I have a 81 Cressida with a 5me and i have been trying to start it and get it running. If i leave the afm off the car will run for about 20 seconds or so and as so ass the gas is pressed it stalls, which i believe is normal. If i start it with the afm on it just turns over and tries to idle but just dies. When the car idles with the afm off and i put it on it dies right away. I have tried this with 2 different afm's and the same result both times. Not sure where to go from here. Any input is better then what i have right now. Thanks!!!

Two questions that might be stupid...

Have you tried opening up either AFM to see if the cog can be adjusted to where the car runs? I'd start by manually holding it open or closed to see if that affects the running condition of the car.

Have you made sure that the TPS is contacting the idle terminal at zero throttle?

I havent checked the throttle yet and if i open the afm with my finger real slow while im opening the throttle body (about the same speed) the car revs good. Thinking it might be a slight vac leak.

sounds like you've got a major vacuum leak and it shouldnt even run hardly at all without the afm. check for vac leaks and check voltage on the tps
