just picked up this 79 te38 after deciding that i was in love with old Japanese cars (i also own an 87 na mr2)
future plans include
3rz engine
fix rust
paint white
og sakura rims
coilovers in front, lowering blocks in rear --- 2inch drop
plaid interior

it was in running condition when i got it although when under extreme throttle or under driving load it would die.
i took it apart, cleaned it and put it back together. now it wont run at all and it "back fires" through the carb.

i replaced the plug wires, coil, plugs, distributor vacuum advance, and a whole lot of vacuum tubing (not quite sure if they are in the correct positions though as the previous owner seems to have tried to delete certain elements of it).

does any one have any suggestion of the direction i should go with it now?

i also found this hole in the block above the camshaft
should this not be here or is it some sort of ventilation?

by the way the roof rack is for sale and maybe the window visors just give me a reasonable offer

Dude thats way cool! I love te38s. On to the question, and yeah I'm pretty sure that holes not supposed to be there. does it go all the way into the actual case? I'm wondering if its just a void created from the sand cast when they made the block. And personally I would go with mk1s over sakuras for this particular car :)

Yeah I think it must have been an imperfection in the block from the way it looked I closed it with some job weld so hopefully that holds. We will see how it turns out for the rims I am just in love with the pink or gold sakuras right now

I have another question though does anyone have a vacuum diagram for the 2 tc that isn't for Cali spec cars? Thats the only one I could find and it's on some Russian website.

Most of them have a diagram under the hood that you may be able to look at. Otherwise if theyre all missing or damaged I say get a weber and just get it over with. Or if you want to go side draft carbs I'm pretty sure I have a side draft manifold for a 2tc.

you said you "took it apart and cleaned it". what exactly did you take apart? The carb? Did you remove the distributor? Because it sounds like your distributor may be way out of time. That's usually what causes a backfire through the carb condition in my experience.

1- I may be interested in that side draft manifold could you pm me with what your looking to get ou of it and well go from there.
2- I took the carb apart and cleaned it the gas tank is full of rust so that wasn't helping things out at all.
3- you are completely correct about the dizzy being way out of time I didn't know at first that you had to the notch on the oil pump gear moved. I set it to where it should be and it doesn't back fire through carb any more. But it alsO doesn't star at all now. I have no idea how to set that carb to a point where it should run.

I would cean the tank out and treat it FIRST...otherwise you will chase tiny rust particles CONSTANTLY (I'm speaking from experience here) secondly, I would trash the stock Aisan carb in favor of something easier to tune (I chose a Holley cause it was cheap) I took my Aisan carb apart NUMEROUS times chasing rust issues. NO FUN!!
