In Aus the two major sellers of utes - Ford (Falcon) and GM Holden (Commodore) now have the rear bed split from the cab. But they are still both essentially car based. But the "split" only happened in the last five years or so. BTW A ute with a tray-back in Oz is generally called a "Tonner" as they were traditionally rated for a one ton payload. Example:

An F250 would still be called a ute down here anyway.
Brett, better also add the term "Tilly" here too. The 11 utes in my collection have all had that nickname from the original owners!
