It was hella-hot today at Prospect Hotel for the second ever running of the Datsun Day. Many thanks to the many hands behind the scenes at the Sydney Datsun Club for putting on a great show.


R31 GTS-R Skyline was pretty modified, 266rwkw I believe from the RB20DET-R. GTS-R is of course the Group A homologation version, of which 800 were made (with huge T04E huffer)


Modern cars were notable by their relative absence, the only post 90s cars were an R34 and an S13.


Over here in Australia, we call this donk-style "Sex Spec". I have no idea where this terminology first came from, but it's stuck. I think it's because at car shows, this type of showcars were the first to have promo girls as part of their showcar display. Sex Spec applied to a 280ZX...

But many of the cars in attendance were stock, including quite a few USDM 2 door coupes. Suprisingly, quite a few USDM 510s have been imported over the years. We didn't get the 2-door you see.


Super-clean grandpa-spec, and it was remarkable how many cars were this good. Definitely more quality cars this year than last.

Interesting powerplant choice for this Sunny Coupe


Twin-plug Z18 turbo from the early 80s Bluebird SSS Turbo...pretty rare motor these days. Z18 also holds a place imn Aussie motorsport history, because a Z18 powered 810 Bluebird held the qualifying lap record at Bathurst for many years. It was revealed in later years by the team that the motor was a one-lap only grenade spec, with the boost control turned up as far as it would go (no one is really sure how much boost it ran exactly)






Another clean Stanza SSS. The ADM SSS was just an appearance package though.


I think the Cedric boys outnumbered the Skylines and Zeds today

With interesting 4bbl carb conversion. I know 4bbl kits for Zed in the USA are pretty commonplace, but it's not something that was popular here in Oz.

He was selling L-series oil filters at 4 for $10 (I bought four!) but there were a few other well stocked trade stands

We also had some aussie muscle in attendance.

This one is an 80s GM sedan called the Holden Commodore. It's similar to the european Opel Rekord, but the chassis is quite different, the aussie version has a 5.0L V8 and live axle. I'm pretty sure it doesn't share its chassis with any of the 80s rwd GM cars in the USA like the Monte Carlo. In general aussie muscle cars tend to have a bit of a circuit vibe, it's a little bit like as if the US TransAm series had continued on. V8s racing around road courses are the most popular motorsport here.


This one is also a Holden, but an early 70s Torana GTR XU1. it's very compact (actually about the size of the Hako) but with a straight six instead of a V8. In the early 70s, the Mopar and Ford competition were V8s, so this made for interesting racing as the lighter Toranas made the most of their better handling and fewer pit stops.


But by the mid 70s, the Torana formula had moved onto V8s, and this one is an A9X Torana. 5.0L V8 and live axle, it grew from the previous GTR XU1. Kinda like an aussie Hako, with the flares and spoilers, huh?




These are known as Chasers in Australia. They're the widened wheels that were fitted to police cars in the 80s, so they're a popular aftermarket fitment for anyone on a budget. But over the years they've become a little iconic in their own right.






It's a novelty seeing a 230 Ceddy, that isn't in Seibu Keisatsu being blown up

You might have noticed by now, that some of the cars have "failed" to successfully hide their intercoolers


Much of the J-tin scene in Australis has its roots in drag racing, where things like aesthetics take a back seat to function.


So having half an intercooler poking out isn't generally seen as being a bad thing


And some ppl might actually do it deliberately...


This I believe is an MA70 Supra intercooler.






But we do have the technology to hide the intercooler so i think that for some ppl, the exposed IC is a style thing


This V6 turbo powered 510 was a good example


Very stealth


As was this one (the NOS'd JDM SSS coupe from before)


It was a very hot day, but it was a terrific event put on by the Sydney Datsun Club.


The Hako was lucky enough to get a prize for Best 70s Datsun, which is really cool And we're all looking forward to the next year.

Kev, "hella-hot" gets no where near justifying how hot it was there....but none the less, a fantastic show, the hako was looking pretty spiffy.

Sometimes I wish I was into Datsun's, I regularly see 3 minters each week. A little 411 sedan that lives down the road from me and the old lady drives it to the train station every few days, a super mint 180B sedan(white with blue interior) owned by an old fella, and a 240K sedan owned by another old fella. All very nice, well maintained cars!
