I used the stock crossmember (is that what you meant about subframe?), and had some mounts mocked up....I will post pics of my mounts below
Its a very close fit....my oil pan is like a cm or two from touching the crossmember, the engine like a inch from the firewall...
I had to massage the tranny tunnel just a bit so it could sit back far enough for the w58 I used out of an MK2 to line up in the stock shifter position

Plenty of room for the stock clutch fan and rad with the engine sat far back like this...plus, way better to have the weight of the 2jz farther back behind the front wheels

For the Rad I used a stock universal fit mishimoto one (perfect size) I made my own mounting system using L brackets and rubber stoppers screwed to the frame......worked like a charm.....(I can post a pic if you like)

sorry for posting pics in your thread....I will be making a thread on the build soon, but right now am trying to get my wiring sorted

Have you figured out what you will do for the rear end? I can also offer what I did there if you need some ideas....

I love your car and its amazing to see a twin of sorts out there !

The mounts are not symmetrical, this is important because the mounting holes on the block are different of each side as a result of the oil filter

With my mounts, I used the front most engine block holes (as you can see in the pic hopefully)

I modded the right side mount (right side if sitting in car, left side if standing at front facing engine bay) to be 2" further back,
and the left side mount (side with oil filter) to be 2.5 " further back...

this allowed the engine to sit further back in the bay and have the w58 line up perfect with stock auto trans shift location

If you just wanted to use straight mounts....you could use an mk3 or sc300 w58 that has the shifter further back...
but then you will need to fab a custom trans mount bracket

Also, by a stroke of crazy luck, I was able to use the stock auto trans crossmember to bolt up my transmission, without even having to redrill the holes!
It's hard to describe how shocked I was (...and happy ;)..that it lined up after changing both engine and transmission and making custom mounts...that may be another reason to look at making mounts that shift the engine back another two inches or so like I did, if you are mounting an MK2 w58....
What trans are you using?
Hope this helped
Chris.

Just saw this in another mx32 owners build thread on here...

these look like a much easier solution than what I did...you might want to check these out

http://www.xcessivemanufacturing.com/ON ... =4&pid=248

wish I would have known about these!

one thing about those excessive mounts though...
(http://www.xcessivemanufacturing.com/ON ... =4&pid=248),

it seems they mount the engine super low in the bay, and I would be worried about how low the oil pan is....its never a good idea to have the oil pan lower than the crossmember....my engine looks to sit about an 1 1/2-2" higher and my oil pan is just slightly higher than the crossmember...something to consider especially on lowered cars like ours

one problem i also ran into was fuel....

Some 2jzvvti have a returnless fuel system, which requires a special tank that has the fuel pressure regulator inside the tank, which means issue fitting a new tank into an old car

My 2jz vvti is JDM so it has a return line...so I have no issues there, just had to redo my fuel tank sending unit with biggerlines to handle modern EFI fuel pressures, and redo my fuel line

If your engine has a returnless system, you can also look into modifying your fuel rail instead of swapping tanks, and running a return line from your fuel rail with a fuel pressure regulator added....this allows you to keep your stock fuel tank with a few easy mods....

That helps a lot! Thanks!

Yeah, I meant crossmember. But did you keep the original steering then? We plan to use a rack from a Carina, as we want to modify the steering geometry a little for drifting (aiming for 55-60° of lock).

I'm using a W58 transmission from a MKIV Supra. Guess I will line it up with the trans mount, then take it from there if possible.

I'm pretty sure I have a return line for the fuel, so that shouldn't be a problem :)

yea, for now I have stock steering....maybe I will upgrade that sometime in the future...

What year carina are you using the rack from? Do you know any other toyota racks that fit x3 ?

I think the w58 for the mk4 has the extended shifter....so you may have to relocate the hole for the shifter further back, or I know you can also remove the extension on the w58 and replace it with one that isnt as far back...I think I have a link to an article on that somewhere...I will check

Don't know much about the rack, but I'll ask my mate. We will just make it fit, hoping the bumpsteer will not be too bad.

Yeah, I think I have the extended shifter :(

Here is a link to a forum post that describes in detail how to retrofit an mk4 w58 for the shifter position of the Mk2 w58 (aka ideal shifter position for x3)
Just read two or three posts down the page and he (Norbie) describes in detail how to change shifter locations and gives photos and I think part numbers,
Enjoy :tu:

One other thing I noticed from looking at pics of your motor set, is that you have a rear sump 2jz....
That sump location will foul on crossmember and or steering...
I used a front sump, and as far as I know, that's the only possibility, unless you know of another way to make it work..?
It's easy to swap the pan.....but they can be a bit pricey

On my friends VVTi ma61, we just drilled and tapped a 1/4npt hole in the front end of the fuel rail, then screwed in a hose barb for the return.

Great Cressida!

What size tyres are you using on those rims? I want to put the same rims on my Cressida and those tyres look like the perfect size.
