hey jnc,
I have a 1985 nissan sentra, its once had a rare cd17 diesel which ran like a sewing machine until about 206,000 miles, it lost oil pressure and died. Heres some pics of it with xxrs.., it has old school nismo/addco sway bars (yes they make them for this model). Bilstein front and rear shocks, 6kg front and 4 kg skunk2 coilover sleeves from an rsx and redrilled 240sx camber plates.

and a current pic with weds autobahn mesh.

I was totally bummed my Prized cd17 went out until this showed up. The cd17 block turns out
being a C series engine shares an extremely large amount of similarities to the CA18s block.
Furthermore with the B11 chassis being pre 2000 lbs, very much fun should result from a decent amount of power.

more later I guess xD

Swapped the differential+ bearings for one from a T11 stanza to suit the
1985 sentra cv axles. This is a transmission for a 1987 pulsar with the
ca16de
Image

installed just after bearing preload checks.
Image

Used the CD17 dust shield/trans plate, and 1987 pulsar CA16 flywheel+ clutch
Image

deleted the power steering pump also, with a rear mount 1986 200sx alternator.

Lovin this build. I like seeing modern motors put into most older imports. Especially something this uncommon on the roads.

thats nice, we only had the ca18 as a DET, with turbo in what we call 200sx and you have as a 240sx. never seen it with a fwd gearbox. thats interesting.

OH hey its blown, just wanted to let you know you've been a great inspiration with that B11 ice racer back in the day!

The CA is installed and functional, the right axle is a little short by 1/2" but the joint is still inside the cup far enough to be functional at all suspension positions. Ill have to order a custom shaft later on or frankenstein a set from another car or different year sentra. Ive put over 10,000 miles on it and it's been running very well. Furthermore the alternator was a bit close to the passenger frame rail, so I had to run the shortest belt possible to gain clearance from 1/4 of an inch to more than an inch which is the same as the old diesel engine. It is also running a walbro gsl391 190lph hour external pump without a surge tank, just have to keep it above 1/8 of tank capacity which is fine with me because it still has more than a 250 mile range with that.

Image

And a video of the first time it ever ran. Timing was not set, there was no exhaust, and no air filter but wow what a great sound it was. Ill have higher quality video and more pictures with the swap fully complete when life slows down a little.

Nice work Leadpaw! How aboutsome driving impressions? The car musy really haul now.

So you're using the original diesel transaxle? With the larger engine is that why the axle is short? If so is the other one too long now?

Mike

Im currently using a 1987 pulsar ca16de rs5f31a transmission, the cd17 F30a gearbox didnt work because the diesel engine had an absolutely massive flywheel, and bell housing to fit that. I also felt the rs5f31a trans was the minimum necessary to take the power of the ca18 (according to aichi machine the maximum designed input torque is 110ft/lbs for the 30a http://www.aichikikai.co.jp/en/products ... index.html). Since the bell housing was now shorter the diesel axle was too long to fit, so gas sentra axle it was which is a little bit too short. The cd17 block is almost identical to the ca18 in every dimension except deck height, it was about an inch or two taller than the ca18de block, id like to think the cd17 is probably closer to the ca20 in design.

Yeah the car is amazingly quick and torque steer surprisingly somewhat absent. Its great to have enough power to come out of lift throttle oversteer situations now rather than spinning out. Ill have some driving vids later :).
