Anyone recognize these wheels? (BRE Datsun)

I saw these wheels on a Datsun roadster at the Monterey historics at Laguna Seca over the weekend. Anyone recognize what they are?

Yes, but no. Those are VTO LeMans wheels. They are new, and that set happens to be the first set on a car. Pete Brock designed those wheels specifically for the roadster to replace the American Racing Libre wheels they were running to start with. BRE later went on to use them on the 240Z. I know a friend with a real set of them. The real ones are magnesium, these are aluminum.

That is Adam Corolla's car that has been restored very very well. It is the original BRE car. Had BRE not had the success they did with this car, this forum might not even exist. When it comes to Japanese cars racing in the US, the BRE 44/14 car might be the most important car in the world. It also happens to be the car I pay tribute to with my car.

I've got some pics I shot over the weekend of this car if anyone wants to see them.

Here are some pics of Adams car.

There you go, the original BRE car, and quite possibly the most important Japanese race car to run in the US.

By the way, all the graphics on the car are hand painted, brush strokes and all. Just like the original.

Wow. That is a strong statement. Care to qualify that one?

I agree that it is an outstanding restoration, Les does fantastic work with projects like this-- the hand lettering on the side of the car is the icing on the cake.

But your comment that this particular roadster is the most important US-based Japanese race car is comical. I want some of that Kool-Aid you are drinking!

The BRE cars had an outstanding legacy and Brock was a master at promotion, then and now. Bob Sharp had a much longer legacy racing Datsun and Nissan products, and in-fact gave Nissan their first National Championship in a roadster in 1967-- something that BRE was never able to accomplish with the roadsters. We all know about the success with the 510s and 240Z later...

There are lots of Japanese race cars that had amazing careers on US soil, and while Adam's car is a stunning restoration, and it great to see it being raced in anger again, it is just one of many...
