That cam looks rooted. Time for an upgrade

yeah but then it snowballs because you find a 12A, then it needs seals, then the housings are worn, then the bloody 12A carby floats won't work properly, so then you have to go Weber blah blah blah. Wait, this song sounds familiar...

Umm... see below... At least UC's are cheap! If I'm going to ruin an engine by mistake once and learn from it, I'd rather do it now on something not so expensive. Maybe if I bought a 3 door hatch?

Dont forget the new brakes, diff, gearbox, driveshaft, tyres, etc. It is already loud and heavy on fuel!

I took the head and cam to an engine rebuilder yesterday. He said the head might be saveable, but I'd need a new cam. A regrind of the crank plus new bearings would be up around $300 and a new cam + head clean up would be another hundred or so...

I'm still yet to find all the engines people say they throw away when they get a rotary. Might have a lead on one, waiting to find out ...

While the engine was out I decided to clean up and spray the exhaust. It had a few lumpy welds and some scratched paint. It looks alot better all in one colour.

I might get an exhaust tip while I've got it out..

I know those sights.... of rotten needle bearings with my project.

Bit of an update today...

After a couple of weeks of looking for a new engine, I couldnt find anything in good condition and close to me. I ended up ringing a Mazda wrecker in north Melbourne who had 2 engines with a 5 speed and all the bits. I also made an offer on a set of rims, which was also in Melbourne...

Roadtrip! My uncle offered the use of his campervan + trailer (Toyota Hiace 2.8 non-turbo diesel) So we went down thursday and back friday

Way home. I had forgotten how boring and long the trip was last time I went down, possibly not helped by the slowest car on the highway About 1700 km in two days!


The booty: set of rims, 2 engines, gearboxes and crossmembers/driveshafts/clutch pedal, etc

New wheels! Rial mesh 15"s , lower offset than the old rims, and a bigger lip! Two need a small repair, so they'll be a longer term project.. They fill out the guards much better than the old ones



Gearbox cleans up ok. I still need to give the engine a good clean and pull off the sump to check it! The 5 speed is the same length as the auto, so I'll keep the auto driveshaft and crossmember. At this stage I need to fit the clutch+brake pedals, make the hole in the firewall and find a clutch cable!

The wheels look great mate, really suit the car. Good luck with the new engine.

Cheers! Really stoked to have got them. The date stamp on the rims is 82, so they are period correct, which I love. They wont be on for a couple of months, unless I run a mix of front/back pairs.

I spent most of today scraping and cleaning all the accumulated crud off of the engine and gearbox. Its now nice shiny metal rather than sludgy black. I should have it ready to go in by next weekend, being on the road is determined by when I can get a clutch cable..

Well I'd always wanted a 5 speed, just didnt want to get one this way! One good thing about cleaning it first is that you can find where the leaks are coming from.

Yeah, almost as much fun as driving it!

Couple of things done in the last couple of days.

First thing I got done was a wiring adapter for the front headlights/parkers. I wanted the whole of the orange lense to be the blinker and the parker to go through the H4 conversion kit.

I dont like cutting/changing the loom just incase I want to go back. Ignore the red tape, I need to get some more black. The two red wires going out the small hole are for the parker.

Cleaned up in the bell housing. Carby cleaner cuts through the grease much better than degreaser! From...

To... I need to get some proper high temp grease for the pivot point and the bearing.

I decided to do a test fit of the gearbox, you can measure all you like but sometimes you just need to stick it in and have a look. This is running the auto crossmember and driveshaft and fits perfect!

Lines up with the hole for the auto... But the hole isnt big enough to bolt the shifter on properly. I'll make a template of the manual cover and see how much I need to take off.

Interior now.. Still need to get/make a new drivers side kick panel, get some boots fot the shifter, wire up the gauges, fit the clutch/brake pedals

Exhuast tip I got from ebay. Its just a cheap knock-on one but looks much better than before. It still needs to be pushed on a bit further
