Last year I came across this KE10, freshly pulled from the bushes, for $200.

The car was a mess. It ran, barely. Too much throttle and the car choked itself out on oil and took ages to start again. The car literally didnt have enough power to overcome a garden hose it snagged on the lawn!

The shell was structurally sound in the floors and rockers but just about everything else was garbage. Using parts from the green car shown above, I swapped out the very tired 1100cc motor and 2spd automatic for a 1200cc and 4spd, and replaced the brakes, steering, and gas tank. The plan was to just drop it as low as possible on the steelies and make a ratty cruiser. Unfortunately, the motor had been sitting through the winter in the parts car without antifreeze, and after all that work I discovered the block was cracked.

The project was stalled until after I was rear ended in my KE17 Sprinter. Then, I decided that while the Sprinter gets a body shell restoration, all the goodies would go into the KE10 for drifting!! Yay!

Concept sketch of final product:

Flares may be provided by sheet plastic or plastic rain barrels cut and molded with the heat gun.

As for actual progress:

Image

Cuz the steering box is from a collapsible column te27, it doesn't fit with the stuff for a non collapsible KE10 dash mount and such. So I rigged this up right onto the steering shaft itself with a plastic bushing and a little grease. No signal stalk, so I guess maybe I'll put some toggle switches on the dash at some point. Maybe. I like the simplicity.

Pulled a late-nighter in my workshop, and got the car to the track for the first event of the season. I was just doing practice laps, I'm too much of a novice to compete and the car is still way too twitchy to drift properly. Hell of a lot of fun though, and the 3TC makes plenty of power for a 1500lb car!

Things to work on for the next event:

Better rear shocks, a panhard bar, cut the tunnel for driveshaft clearance.

Build firewall between me and gas tank.

Increase steering caster and fit some wider tires on.

Stronger e-brake system. Homebrew hydraulic maybe?

Remove even more weight. Rear window will be gone, trunk floor, maybe some speed holes ahead of the strut towers. The car is already under 1500, I want it at 1400!

you are awesome and so is your car!!!
Well done sir!!!

Just please keep the back glass. That pic of the AE86 next to you just looks like crap. I see better things for the KE10. Plus that glass only weighs about 10lbs.

Yeah I'm going to focus more on the handling and setup rather than chopping the car up. I believe its light enough, and the flares would be cool but practically speaking, I couldn't slide with tires that wide, and flares+pizza cutters is just silly. This car started off as just a bit of a joke, but It definitely has its own personality and it deserves to live longer than a couple drift races... so the glass stays :)

We had a drift day on the 23rd, and the car was performing much better with some lengthened control arms and the caster maxed out. With so much caster I'm finally getting some self-steer behavior, but I still have to fight it with both hands all the time. Its nothing like those guys in 240s driving with one hand on the wheel letting it spin this way and that! It looks rather frantic, and I managed to bruise my passengers shoulder with my elbow... not a lot of room in the car!

I'm still spinning out a lot. The car is very light and twitchy, and seems to need more speed in the corners than the bigger cars. That would be cool if it was a race, but it makes it hard to drive with the other cars. My first set of tires were 155/80/13s, and I think they were too small. By the end of the big corners the tires would suddenly become so greasy it felt like there was oil on the track and it was very hard to prevent a spin. Later, I threw on some bigger tires and entered the corners faster, and the cars behavior got way more predictable. The biggest challenge for me in getting the hang of drifting has been the variation in behavior between each set of tires I try. And the fact I'm driving a car with a 48" track width and 90" wheelbase. Also, for some reason I keep exploding rear tires before they are even heavily worn. The sidewalls just blow up all the way around the rim while I'm in a corner. Its happened twice. I guess the tires are just old. I was running 35ish psi in them both times.

Cosmetically, I added a couple stickers, and put a grille and hood on it.

The 3TC held up fine, but halfway through the day my main jets came loose in the sidedrafts. The car began to misfire horribly, and then I realized there was gas actually pouring out of the exhaust!! That was a quick fix though. Anyways, on to some track photos by Quinn at http://speedhero.wordpress.com/

They are too big, I have to link them :/

Schools out, no job, now I get to play with Corollas whenever I want. Over the last couple days I have:

*Fixed the ebrake with new cables, and took the spring out of the handbrake so the ratchet only works when you pull the button out by hand.

**Finished painting the hood,

***Did some ghetto flaring of the front fenders to fit 14s. The wider less pos offset rims should give me some more steering feedback/self steer. And they give me more lock cause the tires don't hit the frame rails right away. I relocated the brake hardlines so they don't rub on the tires. Now I'm at about 50deg max angle from straight. I had to cut about 6in out of the fender to fit the 14s with 185/60 tires. They look hilariously big on the car.

****Removed some more weight.

Stay tuned, next event is the 8th!!

Here are a whole bunch of pics from the last event. Unfortunately I have to put the car in storage at least until next summer, while I focus on my education :/

haha, those headlights are rad! Surprised Ive never seen anybody do that before :D. Car looks awesome! Not sure how I feel about the hood, but I've heard that said countless times about my car, so I'm the last person in the world to be able to pass judgement :D
